        Our story

Meet the local experts, a 100% Costa Rican family

My name is Johnson Paniagua Berrocal, and Tropical Experts Costa Rica is the family company I founded in 2023 together with my wife and co-founder, Andrea Segura. We live in La Fortuna de San Carlos with our two daughters, at the foot of Arenal volcano, and from here we lead a team of professional drivers covering the whole country.

I have spent more than 21 years in tourism, working in all kinds of places: canopy guide at Sky Trek, rafting guide and naturalist guide. I then moved into five-star hotels such as Tabacón and Arenal Kioro, in guest reception, concierge and customer service, where I also trained new staff. I know what a traveller needs because I have worked in every link of their trip.

And there is one chapter of my life that defines how we work: I was a detective with the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) for 8 years. That is where the values this company does not negotiate come from — safety, discipline, attention to detail and punctuality. For us, transporting someone is not moving them from one point to another: it is taking responsibility for our clients arriving safe, comfortable and on time.

Today we have more than 1,200 transfers completed, with modern vehicles with reclining seats, our tourist transport permits in force, travel insurance and I.C.T. licence #3946-2025 (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, the country's tourism regulator). Our mission is simple: to make your holiday the best it can be, and for you not merely to reach your destination, but to enjoy the road there.

        What makes this country different

The soda: the restaurant Costa Rica invented by accident

The name comes from the fizzy-drink counters in 1950s San Jose pharmacies. Today it is where the whole country eats for seven dollars. We explain the unwritten rules and how to spot a good one.

Anatomy of the casado: the dish nobody invented and everybody claims

Four theories compete over the name and none is documented. We take the plate apart piece by piece, show how it shifts from province to province, and how to tell a good one.

The golden grain: how coffee built Costa Rica

From 1776 to the ship that carried 5,505 hundredweight to England on credit and without guarantee. Coffee paid for the printing press, the currency and the university - but not the National Theatre, and the documents say so.

The day Costa Rica knocked down its own barracks: how the army was abolished

On 1 December 1948, the victor of the civil war took a mallet to the barracks wall. The keys ended up with the Minister of Education — and the barracks became a museum.

The Monteverde Quakers: the mountain that exists because a country threw away its guns

In 1951, eleven Alabama families chose Costa Rica for one precise reason: it had just abolished its army. From their dairy and their «Eternal Forest» grew the reserve the world now visits.

The painted oxcart of Sarchí: the cargo truck that became a work of art

Coffee reached the port after fifteen days of mud, on a solid wheel that cut through the bog. The paint began as a town licence plate and ended up declared heritage of humanity.

        What you learn from driving

Getting to Monteverde without losing a day: the three roads and which to take

Monteverde is reached by three different roads and only one is paved the whole way. We compare the climb from the Pacific, the Tilarán route and the boat crossing from La Fortuna, with times we measured rather than estimated.

The night the mountain turned out to be a volcano: Arenal's 1968 eruption

Until July 1968 locals called it «the hill» and farmed its slopes. The blast that buried two villages ended up founding, unplanned, the entire destination La Fortuna is today.

        Where we take you

The destinations that move the country

We know the real driving times on each road, not the ones the map claims. Here is what to know before choosing your route.

        Pick-up and drop-off

We leave you at your hotel door

Straight to your hotel door, no extra charge. The price depends on the zone, not the exact hotel — so pick whichever one you like. These are the ones we visit most often; if yours is not listed, we still take you there. Some hotels sit in rural areas where a 4x4 vehicle may be needed; if you already know that is your case, just let us know when booking and we will confirm the right fare right away.
