The lodge, officially Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails, gives its own directions: leave Route 142 at the turn-off by the police post before the lake, go past the entrance of Arenal Volcano National Park and continue for nine kilometres on a gravel road. In total it is 22 km from La Fortuna, about 30 minutes. It describes itself as an eco-lodge.
Two consequences for your transfer. The fare is higher than for town: our calculator has the lodge as its own zone at La Fortuna +$20. And the access has opening hours: according to the lodge, its gate is open from 5:00 to 23:00. That matters for late arrivals and very early departures, so we plan your times around it.

Getting to Arenal Observatory Lodge from SJO and Liberia
From SJO airport (San José)
From SJO the route is the usual one to La Fortuna, Route 1 and then Route 702 or Route 141 over the mountains, followed by Route 142 west, the turn-off before the lake and the gravel road to the lodge. Our fare table gives approx. 3 h 30 min from SJO to the lodge. If your flight lands in the evening, add immigration and the drive: you may be close to the 23:00 gate closing.
From Liberia airport (LIR)
From Liberia the road runs around Lake Arenal on the north shore and meets Route 142 on the volcano's western side, where the turn-off to the national park and the lodge is, before La Fortuna town. Our fare table gives approx. 3 h – 3 h 15 min, depending on the direction. The last 9 km are gravel, so that stretch is slow whatever the vehicle.

Practical notes for Arenal Observatory Lodge
- Check the gate hours against your flight. Landing at SJO after about 18:00, or needing to leave the lodge before 5:00 for an early flight, can clash with the 5:00–23:00 gate; tell us your flight and we will look at it with you.
