The service
Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Tamarindo
Leaving Arenal for Tamarindo is easier when someone else handles the road. Your driver picks you up at your hotel at the time that suits you, loads the luggage and drives your group, and only your group, straight to your accommodation in Tamarindo.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
Your destination
Arriving in Tamarindo
Tamarindo is the busiest beach town in Guanacaste: a long bay with surf for every level, a main street full of restaurants, bars and surf shops, and sunsets that draw a crowd to the sand every evening. At the north end of the beach, the Tamarindo estuary separates the town from Playa Grande and the Las Baulas National Marine Park.
There are hotels for every budget, from hostels to resorts. Among those we drive to are Tamarindo Diriá Beach Resort, Hotel Capitán Suizo, Hotel Jardín del Edén, Wyndham Tamarindo and Cala Luna Boutique Hotel. It is also a good base for day trips to quieter beaches north and south.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 215 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal, Route 1 north, Route 21 across Guanacaste, then the Huacas–Tamarindo roads
- Last stretch
- From Huacas, the road through Villarreal into Tamarindo
From Huacas, local roads lead south and west to Tamarindo, Playa Grande and the beaches beyond. The coast here is a chain of separate bays, so the last few kilometres depend on exactly where you are staying.
From the Huacas area the road heads south and west through Villarreal and drops into Tamarindo. The final stretch along the main street can be slow in the afternoon, when the town fills up.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Tamarindo
From the volcano to Tamarindo, the view changes along the way:
Lake Arenal
A long stretch along the north shore of the largest lake in the country, with views to the volcano on clear days.
Tilarán's turbines
The wind farms on the ridges above the lake, one of the reasons Costa Rica produces most of its electricity from renewable sources.
The Tamarindo estuary
The river mouth at the north end of the beach, lined with mangroves; boat tours look for crocodiles and birds there.
Villarreal
The small inland town just before Tamarindo, where many locals who work on the coast live.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
If you would rather make a day of it, Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) includes one to two hours of sightseeing stops, a bilingual driver-guide, a welcome kit and sparkling water on board. Stops you can request on this route:
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
When that section is shut, we switch to the inland road through Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, which meets the Inter-American Highway further north; it adds time, and we warn you before you leave. Beyond the lake the highway is wide and easy. Guanacaste's dry months, roughly December to April, bring heat and dust; the rest of the year the plains turn green.
The roads to Tamarindo are paved. In town, the main street is narrow and busy; in the dry season, from December to April, Tamarindo is hot and sunny, and on weekends and holidays traffic increases.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.
