Your destination
Arriving in Monteverde
Monteverde is the cloud-forest region around the village of Santa Elena, high in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Its reserves, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve among them, protect misty forest full of mosses, orchids and birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Hanging bridges, canopy lines, night walks and coffee and chocolate tours fill the days.
The community of Monteverde was founded in the early 1950s by a group of American Quakers who settled here and began dairy farming, and the area still has a small-farm feel. Hotels we drive to include Hotel Belmar, Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, Hotel Fonda Vela, Senda Monteverde, El Establo, Trapp Family Lodge, Koora and Hotel Poco a Poco.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 115 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Tilarán, then the mountain road up to Santa Elena
- Last stretch
- From Tilarán, the mountain road up to Santa Elena; rough or gravel in places
Monteverde and Arenal are close as the crow flies but separated by Lake Arenal and the Tilarán mountains, so the road goes around. The first half follows Route 142 along the north shore of the lake, through Nuevo Arenal, to the town of Tilarán.
The final climb from Tilarán runs through high pasture and patches of forest, with views back over the lake on clear days. In the last kilometres the road reaches Santa Elena and the hotels along the roads towards the reserves.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Monteverde
From the volcano to Monteverde, the view changes along the way:
Lake Arenal
The whole north shore of the lake, with views across the water to the volcano on clear days.
Mountain pastures
Above Tilarán the road crosses high green pastures with long views down to the lake and, on clear days, the Gulf of Nicoya.
Santa Elena
The small village at the heart of Monteverde, with shops, restaurants and tour offices.
The Monteverde ridge
Wind-sculpted trees and pastures along the top of the Cordillera de Tilarán, often in cloud.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 142 around the lake is paved but narrow, with tight curves and almost no street lighting; it has been closed by landslides after heavy rain (July 2024 and July 2026). The mountain road between Tilarán and Monteverde is the rough part: narrow, steep in places and partly unpaved or potholed, depending on recent maintenance. All our vehicles drive it.
The road between Tilarán and Monteverde has rough and partly gravel sections and can be slippery and misty, especially from November to February, when the wind is strongest. All our vehicles drive it regularly. There is also a jeep-boat-jeep option across Lake Arenal, but our service is a private door-to-door transfer by road.
And if a road closure or extreme weather makes the transfer impossible, our terms let you choose: a new date or your money back in full.
