The service

Your private transfer from Liberia Airport (LIR) to La Fortuna

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia — LIR, often called Guanacaste Airport — has direct flights from many cities in the United States and Canada, from Houston, Atlanta and Miami to Toronto and Vancouver. That makes it a practical way into Costa Rica even when your first stop is the volcano rather than the beach.

The drive to La Fortuna is longer than the map suggests, and much of it is on a winding road beside the lake. With a private transfer you don't have to tackle it after a flight: the vehicle is for your group only, the driver tracks your flight and you go door to door, with no stops other than the ones you want.

We are a family company based in La Fortuna, licensed by the Costa Rica Tourism Board (I.C.T. licence #3946-2025). The fare is per vehicle and final — taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats included, nothing to pay the driver. Choose Standard to go direct or VIP to stop along the lake.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 157 km, airport to central La Fortuna
Driving time
approx. 2 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
Route
Route 21 to Liberia, Route 1 south to Cañas, Route 142 via Tilarán and Lake Arenal
Slowest section
the lakeside road between Tilarán and La Fortuna

From the airport you head into Liberia and turn south on Route 1, the Inter-American Highway, across the plains of Guanacaste to Cañas. There you turn inland on Route 142, climb to Tilarán and continue along the north shore of Lake Arenal, through Nuevo Arenal, until you reach La Fortuna.

Our fare table gives approximately 2 hours 45 minutes of driving. Measured on the map, the route is about 157 km, and the lakeside section sets the pace: it is paved but narrow and full of curves, so in rain or after dark the trip can run closer to 3 hours.

The highway part, from the airport to Cañas, is the quick part of the trip. Once you turn toward Tilarán, the landscape and the rhythm change completely.

Along the way

What you'll see between Liberia Airport and La Fortuna

The scenery changes completely between the airport and La Fortuna. On the way you will see:

  • The Guanacaste lowlands

Open, sunny plains along Route 1 between Liberia and Cañas — a very different Costa Rica from the rainforest you are heading to.

  • Tilarán and its wind turbines

As the road climbs toward Tilarán, turbines line the ridges near Tejona. This area is known for its strong wind.

  • Lake Arenal

The road follows the north shore for a long stretch, with views over the water and, on clear days, of the volcano ahead.

  • Nuevo Arenal

A small lakeside town with restaurants and services, handy for a restroom stop.

  • Wildlife by the road

Animals sometimes appear at the roadside along the lake. On a VIP transfer, we stop when they do.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

With Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) you get one to two hours of sightseeing stops, a bilingual driver who doubles as your guide, a welcome kit with local beers, soft drinks and bocas (Costa Rican snacks), and sparkling water on board. On the way from Liberia, the lake is the star. These are the stops we recommend:

  1. Lake Arenal views

Stops along the north shore to take in the lake and, when the clouds allow, the volcano.

  2. The lake lookout (mirador)

Time to get out, stretch after the flight and take photos from a lookout above the water.

  3. Café y Macadamia

A restaurant with a view over the lake: a good place for coffee or lunch.

  4. Wildlife stops

When animals appear beside the road, we pull over so you can see them.

Want longer? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. VIP stops are available on any route in the country, not only this one. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026 describe Route 142 around the lake as paved throughout, but curvy and narrow, with little shoulder, few guard rails and almost no street lights. Strong wind is common near Tilarán. It is a road to drive calmly, and that is why the trip takes longer than the distance suggests.

The lakeside section between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna has been closed by landslides after heavy rain more than once — in July 2024 and again in July 2026. If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer, and we tell you before you set off. If a closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

The big 2026 roadworks reported in the press are on Route 1 on the San José side, between Alajuela and San Ramón, not on this route. Here the variables are the weather and the lake road: September and October are usually the wettest months, and December to April is the dry season.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Add your flight number when you book so we can follow your landing.
  2. If you get carsick, prepare for the lake curves: sit up front or in the first row and look ahead.
  3. If your flight lands in the afternoon, add immigration and the drive and you will probably reach La Fortuna around sunset or after dark. Keep a light jacket and a snack in your hand luggage.
  4. Choosing between LIR and SJO? To La Fortuna the fare and the time are almost the same ($225 and approx. 2 h 45 min from Liberia; $220 and approx. 3 h from San José), so pick the airport with the better flights and plan the rest of the trip around it.
  5. Travelling with children? Tell us ages and weights and the right seat will be installed, free of charge.
  6. Bringing surfboards, bikes or diving gear? Tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle.

How much is a private shuttle from LIR to La Fortuna?

$225 in a Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers), $280 in a Toyota Hiace (6–9) and $365 in a Maxus V90 (10–12). Prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, taxes included. VIP adds $80 per vehicle.

Which way do you go?

Route 1 south from Liberia to Cañas, then Route 142 through Tilarán and along the north shore of Lake Arenal, via Nuevo Arenal, to La Fortuna.

Is the road around Lake Arenal paved?

Yes. Recent driving guides describe Route 142 as paved throughout. Along the lake it is narrow and curvy, which is why it is the slowest part of the trip.

What if Route 142 is closed by a landslide?

It has happened after heavy rain, in July 2024 and July 2026. We then take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer, and let you know before departure. If we cannot run the transfer, you can reschedule or get a full refund.

Can we stop at the lake or at Café y Macadamia?

Yes, with Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle): one to two hours of stops at the lake views, a lookout and Café y Macadamia, plus a bilingual driver acting as your guide and a welcome kit. Extra hours are $35 each, up to 4.

Where will the driver meet us at Liberia airport?

Just outside the terminal exit, with a sign bearing your name. We send you the driver's name, photo and plate the day before.

What if our flight is delayed?

We track your flight and adjust the pickup at no extra cost. If the airline cancels the flight, we move your transfer to the new date at no charge.

Should I fly into Liberia or San José to get to La Fortuna?

Either works. From SJO the transfer is $220 and approx. 3 h; from LIR it is $225 and approx. 2 h 45 min (fare-table times). Choose the airport with the better flights for you and think about the rest of the trip: Liberia is the natural gateway to the Guanacaste beaches.
