Your destination
Arriving in Alajuela
Alajuela is the provincial capital closest to Juan Santamaría airport, only a few kilometres from the terminal, which makes it the most practical place to sleep before a morning flight or after a late arrival. Its compact centre has the classic Costa Rican layout: a cathedral, a central park shaded by mango trees and a grid of busy streets around them.
The city is also the birthplace of Juan Santamaría, the drummer boy hero of the 1856 campaign, and there is a small museum about him near the park. Most visitors stay in the hotels along the highway towards the airport or in quieter areas on the edge of town, and we drop off at any of them.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 125 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 702 via San Ramón or Route 141 via Zarcero, then Route 1 (General Cañas highway)
- Last stretch
- Route 1 into Alajuela; the airport hotels are just off the highway
Both meet Route 1, the General Cañas–Bernardo Soto highway, which runs east along the edge of the valley through Grecia towards Alajuela and San José. The mountain half is slow because of the curves; the highway half is slow because of the traffic.
The final kilometres are on Route 1 itself, past the airport turn-off and into Alajuela. If your hotel is one of the airport hotels on the highway, you are there almost as soon as you leave the motorway.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Alajuela
From the volcano to Alajuela, the view changes along the way:
Dairy hills and one-lane bridges
Along Route 702 the road crosses small one-lane bridges where drivers take turns at the yield signs, between pastures and patches of cloud forest.
The edge of the Central Valley
Coffee and sugarcane fields around Grecia and Naranjo, and then the sprawl of Alajuela and Heredia as you approach the capital.
Mango Park
Alajuela's central park, shaded by old mango trees, with the cathedral on one side.
Planes over the valley
Close to the city you can watch jets coming in to land at Juan Santamaría, just a few kilometres away.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 1 between Naranjo and the airport is the busiest section and, in 2026, a work zone: La Nación reported in July 2026 that interchanges at Grecia and San Ramón have been under construction since January, that a new one at El Coyol was about to begin with around 18 months of works and that the Naranjo interchange was waiting for its start order. Lane closures and queues are most likely at rush hour.
Inside Alajuela, traffic is dense at rush hour and the one-way grid can be slow, especially near the centre. Our times are for the city centre; airport-area hotels are slightly quicker to reach.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.
