The service

Your private transfer from SJO Airport to La Fortuna

For most visitors, San José to La Fortuna is the first drive of the holiday — and it comes right after a long flight. A private transfer takes the guesswork out of it. The vehicle is booked for your group only: no strangers, no detours to other people's hotels, no waiting for a shared shuttle to fill up. Your driver tracks your flight, waits if it lands late and takes you from the terminal to the door of your hotel.

Tropical Experts is a family company based in La Fortuna, at the foot of Arenal volcano, operating under licence #3946-2025 from the Costa Rica Tourism Board (I.C.T.). Our founder, Johnson Paniagua, has more than 21 years in tourism, including front-desk and concierge work at La Fortuna hotels such as Tabacón and Arenal Kioro — so the La Fortuna end of this trip is home ground for us.

The fare is per vehicle, not per person, and it is final: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats are all included, and there is nothing to pay the driver. Choose Standard to go straight there, or add Tropical Experts VIP to turn the drive into a day out with waterfall and lookout stops.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 125 km, airport to central La Fortuna
Driving time
approx. 3 h without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 1, then Route 702 via San Ramón or Route 141 via Zarcero
VIP road
over Vara Blanca and Cinchona (about 126 km)

The first stretch is the busy one. From the airport in Alajuela you head west on Route 1, the General Cañas–Bernardo Soto highway, along the edge of the Central Valley. After that, the trip has to cross the mountains that separate the valley from the northern lowlands, and there are two classic ways over.

The first leaves Route 1 at San Ramón and follows Route 702 north through Los Ángeles and La Tigra before dropping down to La Fortuna. The second carries on to Naranjo and climbs Route 141 through Zarcero and Ciudad Quesada. Both are winding mountain roads. Your driver chooses between them on the day, depending on traffic, weather and the state of the road.

Our fare table puts the drive at approximately 3 hours. Rain, fog, queues on Route 1 or a slow truck on a climb can stretch that, and any stops come on top. VIP transfers take a third road, over Vara Blanca and Cinchona, because that is where the waterfall stops are; the distance is almost the same.

Along the way

What you'll see between SJO Airport and La Fortuna

The city is behind you within the first hour. Depending on the road, this is what passes the window:

  • Zarcero (Route 141)

A mountain town at about 1,736 m, known for the topiary garden in Francisco Alvarado park — shaped since the 1960s — in front of the San Rafael church, built in 1895. Expect cool air up here.

  • Los Ángeles and La Tigra (Route 702)

Small communities strung along the road north of San Ramón, with one-lane bridges where drivers take turns at the "Ceda el paso" (give way) signs, and a high section that is often wrapped in fog.

  • The descent to La Fortuna

On either road, the last part of the trip comes down out of the mountains toward the lowlands where La Fortuna sits.

  • Arenal volcano

The cone appears as you approach La Fortuna — if the clouds allow. Afternoons are often cloudy and your best chance is early in the morning, before about 9 a.m., so don't worry if you don't see it on arrival.

  • On the VIP road

La Paz waterfall and the gardens beside it, and the lookout at Cinchona facing the San Fernando waterfall.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

With Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) your transfer includes one to two hours of sightseeing stops, a bilingual driver who doubles as your guide, a welcome kit with local beers, soft drinks and bocas (Costa Rican snacks), and sparkling water on board. On the way from SJO to La Fortuna, these are the stops we recommend:

  1. La Paz waterfall and La Paz Waterfall Gardens

A classic stop on the Vara Blanca road. If you would like to go into the gardens, tell us when you book so we can plan the time.

  2. Restaurante Mirador Cinchona

A restaurant and lookout facing the San Fernando waterfall: a good place for a coffee or lunch, and for bird-watching.

Want longer? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. VIP stops are available on any route in the country, not only this one. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 1 between the airport and San Ramón is the busiest part of the trip. The corridor carries around 40,000 vehicles a day, and in 2026 it is also a work zone: according to La Nación (July 2026), interchange works at Grecia and San Ramón have been under way since January, a new interchange at El Coyol was due to start with about 18 months of construction ahead (into 2027), and another at Naranjo was waiting for its start order. Expect lane closures and slow stretches, especially at rush hour.

Past the highway, the mountain roads are paved but narrow and curvy. A 2026 driving report describes Route 702 as paved nearly all the way, with a rough section between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez, several one-lane bridges and a stretch that is often foggy. Route 141 is known for landslides in the rainy season. Closures do happen — in 2015, when a bridge collapsed on Route 702, traffic was sent via Route 141 — which is exactly why it helps to have two ways across.

Around La Fortuna, September and October are usually the wettest months, while December to April is drier. In heavy rain, allow extra time. If a road is closed on your travel day, your driver takes the alternative and we tell you if it adds time. And if a closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer at all, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Add your flight number when you book: it is how we follow your landing and adjust if you are late.
  2. Keep a light jacket in your hand luggage. The mountain stretch can be cool and misty even if it was hot at the airport.
  3. If you get carsick, take the front seat or the first row and look ahead through the curves.
  4. Landing in the evening? Much of the mountain drive will be in the dark — a good moment to rest. The volcano can wait until morning, when the sky is usually clearest.
  5. Travelling with children? Tell us their ages and weights and the right seat will be installed before we pick you up, free of charge.
  6. Bringing surfboards, bikes or diving gear? Let us know when you book so we send the right vehicle.

Airport logistics

Arriving at SJO Airport: how we meet you

  1. 1The day before, we send you your driver's name, photo and vehicle plate.
  2. 2After landing, go through immigration, collect your bags and pass customs. Queues depend on how many flights land at once. SJO opened automatic eGates in September 2026, but for now they are only for Costa Rican citizens, so visitors use the regular lines.
  3. 3Walk out through the exit doors: your driver is waiting outside with a sign bearing your name. No need to hurry — we are tracking your flight.
  4. 4Anything unexpected? Message us on WhatsApp at +506 8486 7057 or call +506 8762 4779. We answer 24/7.

If your flight is delayed, we adjust the pickup at no extra cost. If the airline cancels it, we move your transfer to the new date at no charge.
