The service
Your private transfer from La Fortuna to San José
A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. You choose the pickup time, we collect you at the door of your La Fortuna hotel and the only stops on the way to San José are the ones you ask for. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.
There are no extras to discover later: the per-vehicle fare already includes taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats. Pick Standard for a direct trip, or upgrade to VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.
Your destination
Arriving in San José
San José is the capital and the largest city in Costa Rica, the cultural and business centre of the Central Valley. For travellers it is where the National Theatre, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the Central Market are, and where many trips begin or end with a night or two in the city.
Our fare zone called San José centro covers downtown and the main hotel areas around it, including Belén, Escazú and Santa Ana to the west. Give us the exact address when you book; the drive to the western suburbs is usually a little shorter than to the city centre.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 30 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.
In San José
What to do in San José
National Theatre and Gold Museum
In the centre, the 1897 National Theatre and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum under the Plaza de la Cultura are a short walk apart.
Central Market
A maze of stalls and sodas where locals eat a casado at lunchtime; a good place to try Costa Rican food.
Barrio Amón and Barrio Escalante
Older neighbourhoods with historic houses, cafés and restaurants, pleasant for an evening walk with local advice.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 140 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 30 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 702 via San Ramón or Route 141 via Zarcero, then Route 1 (General Cañas highway)
- Last stretch
- Route 1 into the Central Valley, then city streets to your hotel
Between Arenal and the Central Valley stands a ridge of mountains, and there are two classic ways over it. One climbs Route 702 through La Tigra and Los Ángeles to San Ramón; the other takes Route 141 through Ciudad Quesada and Zarcero to Naranjo. Your driver picks one on the day, according to weather, traffic and any roadworks.
The last stretch leaves Route 1 for the city streets. Depending on the hotel, the final kilometres can take as long as the previous thirty, especially between 4 and 7 p.m.; the driver knows the side roads.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and San José
From the volcano to San José, the view changes along the way:
Dairy hills and one-lane bridges
Along Route 702 the road crosses small one-lane bridges where drivers take turns at the yield signs, between pastures and patches of cloud forest.
The edge of the Central Valley
Coffee and sugarcane fields around Grecia and Naranjo, and then the sprawl of Alajuela and Heredia as you approach the capital.
The National Theatre
If you have time to explore after arrival, the 1897 National Theatre in the centre is the most famous building in the country.
Coffee country around the valley
Coffee farms climb the slopes around Heredia and Alajuela, visible from Route 1 on clear days.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Prefer to sightsee on the way? Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver who acts as your guide, a welcome kit of local beers, soft drinks and snacks, and sparkling water. We offer it on every route; here, you can ask for:
La Paz waterfall and Mirador Cinchona
With VIP the driver can take the Vara Blanca road instead, with stops at the La Paz waterfall and at the Cinchona lookout facing the San Fernando waterfall.
Zarcero
A short walk through the topiary park and a look at the church, if the route goes via Route 141.
Want more time? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
The mountain roads are paved but narrow and winding. A 2026 driving report mentions a rough section of Route 702 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez and frequent fog on the high part; Route 141 is prone to landslides in the rainy season. Because there are two roads across, a closure on one rarely stops the trip.
San José traffic is heavy on weekdays, especially from 6 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.
Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.

Driver's tips for this route
- Flying out the next morning? Spending the night near the airport is the calm option; we can drop you at any hotel in Alajuela or San José.
- If you are staying downtown, ask the hotel about safe walking routes for the evening; the centre is lively but best enjoyed with local advice.
- Arriving on a weekday afternoon? A slightly earlier pickup in La Fortuna avoids the evening rush into the city.
- Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.
