Leaving San José
From San José to La Fortuna: the logistics
San José is the capital and the largest city in Costa Rica, the cultural and business centre of the Central Valley. For travellers it is where the National Theatre, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the Central Market are, and where many trips begin or end with a night or two in the city.
We collect you at your hotel in San José or the western suburbs. Getting out of the city and onto Route 1 is the slowest part of the morning, so the pickup time we suggest depends on where you are staying and on the day of the week.
The trip ends at the entrance of your hotel in La Fortuna or around Arenal. Town has restaurants, supermarkets and tour offices within a few blocks, and many hotels on the volcano road have their own thermal pools for your first evening.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in San José gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.
Before you go
Before you leave San José
Leave the city early
Pickups before the morning rush make the first hour much quicker; ask the hotel for an early breakfast or a packed one.
Shop for coffee in town
Supermarkets and the Central Market sell local coffee cheaper than the airport, if you want to stock up before Arenal.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 145 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 1 west, then Route 702 via San Ramón or Route 141 via Zarcero
- First stretch
- City streets to Route 1, then west towards Grecia
The first part of the day is getting out of the city: from your hotel to Route 1 and west past the airport towards Grecia. Once past the airport the traffic usually eases.
Once over the top, the road drops into the green lowlands of San Carlos, and the volcano usually appears in the last half hour if the clouds allow it. Leaving early in the morning avoids the worst of the valley traffic.
Along the way
What you'll see between San José and La Fortuna
The scenery changes more than once on the way to Arenal. This is what passes the window:
Coffee country around the valley
Coffee farms climb the slopes around Heredia and Alajuela, visible from Route 1 on clear days.
The edge of the Central Valley
Coffee and sugarcane fields around Grecia and Naranjo, and then the sprawl of Alajuela and Heredia as you approach the capital.
Zarcero's topiary park
If the driver takes Route 141, you pass the Francisco Alvarado park in Zarcero, with cypress hedges clipped into arches and figures in front of the San Rafael church.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Prefer to sightsee on the way? Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver who acts as your guide, a welcome kit of local beers, soft drinks and snacks, and sparkling water. We offer it on every route; here, you can ask for:
La Paz waterfall and Mirador Cinchona
With VIP the driver can take the Vara Blanca road instead, with stops at the La Paz waterfall and at the Cinchona lookout facing the San Fernando waterfall.
Zarcero
A short walk through the topiary park and a look at the church, if the route goes via Route 141.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
The mountain roads are paved but narrow and winding. A 2026 driving report mentions a rough section of Route 702 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez and frequent fog on the high part; Route 141 is prone to landslides in the rainy season. Because there are two roads across, a closure on one rarely stops the trip.
Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.
