The service

Your private transfer from Alajuela to La Fortuna

Getting from Alajuela to Arenal is a long day if you have to piece it together. With us the van comes to your door in Alajuela, the driver loads the luggage and your group rides alone, all the way to reception in La Fortuna.

There are no extras to discover later: the per-vehicle fare already includes taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats. Pick Standard for a direct trip, or upgrade to VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

Leaving Alajuela

From Alajuela to La Fortuna: the logistics

Alajuela is the provincial capital closest to Juan Santamaría airport, only a few kilometres from the terminal, which makes it the most practical place to sleep before a morning flight or after a late arrival. Its compact centre has the classic Costa Rican layout: a cathedral, a central park shaded by mango trees and a grid of busy streets around them.

We collect you at your hotel in Alajuela, whether it is downtown or near the airport highway. Because the first part of the trip is on Route 1, the busiest road in the country, a pickup before 7 a.m. or after the morning rush makes the drive noticeably smoother.

Once you are in La Fortuna you are close to everything the area is known for: the La Fortuna waterfall, the national park trails, the hot rivers and the lake. The driver leaves you at your hotel door and can point you to a good place for dinner.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 2 h 45 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Alajuela gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

Before you go

Before you leave Alajuela

  • Repack for the plane

If you are flying out soon, separate liquids and souvenirs before the drive to Arenal so you are not repacking later.

  • Breakfast near the airport hotels

Most hotels near the airport serve breakfast early; ask the night before so you are fed before the pickup.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 125 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 2 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 1 west, then Route 702 via San Ramón or Route 141 via Zarcero
First stretch
Out of Alajuela onto Route 1 westbound

From Alajuela the van joins Route 1 heading west towards Grecia and Naranjo. On a weekday morning, that first half hour on the highway is the least predictable part of the whole trip.

Once over the top, the road drops into the green lowlands of San Carlos, and the volcano usually appears in the last half hour if the clouds allow it. Leaving early in the morning avoids the worst of the valley traffic.

Along the way

What you'll see between Alajuela and La Fortuna

The scenery changes more than once on the way to Arenal. This is what passes the window:

  • Planes over the valley

Close to the city you can watch jets coming in to land at Juan Santamaría, just a few kilometres away.

  • Dairy hills and one-lane bridges

Along Route 702 the road crosses small one-lane bridges where drivers take turns at the yield signs, between pastures and patches of cloud forest.

  • Zarcero's topiary park

If the driver takes Route 141, you pass the Francisco Alvarado park in Zarcero, with cypress hedges clipped into arches and figures in front of the San Rafael church.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Prefer to sightsee on the way? Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver who acts as your guide, a welcome kit of local beers, soft drinks and snacks, and sparkling water. We offer it on every route; here, you can ask for:

  1. La Paz waterfall and Mirador Cinchona

With VIP the driver can take the Vara Blanca road instead, with stops at the La Paz waterfall and at the Cinchona lookout facing the San Fernando waterfall.

  2. Zarcero

A short walk through the topiary park and a look at the church, if the route goes via Route 141.

Want more time? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

The mountain roads are paved but narrow and winding. A 2026 driving report mentions a rough section of Route 702 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez and frequent fog on the high part; Route 141 is prone to landslides in the rainy season. Because there are two roads across, a closure on one rarely stops the trip.

Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Fresh off a long-haul flight? Taking the transfer the morning after landing, rather than the same night, means you see the mountains in daylight.
  2. Have breakfast before the pickup: the first stop with a good choice of food is a while away.
  3. Buy snacks or a coffee before leaving the city; the mountain section has few places to stop.
  4. Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.
