A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.

Your destination

Arriving in Playa Hermosa (Guanacaste)

This Playa Hermosa is the one in Guanacaste, on the Gulf of Papagayo between Playas del Coco and Playa Panamá, not the surf beach of the same name near Jacó. It is a wide, sheltered bay of grey sand with calm water for most of the year, good for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling, and famous for its sunsets over the gulf.

The village behind the beach is small and residential, with a few restaurants, condominiums and hotels such as Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar. Coco, with its shops and dive centres, is a few minutes away, and Liberia airport is close, which makes Hermosa a comfortable last stop before flying home.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 175 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Cañas, Route 1 north to Liberia, then Route 21 west
Last stretch
From Route 21 near Sardinal, the local road down to the bay

The drive to the Gulf of Papagayo has three parts. First comes the lake road, Route 142, which follows the north shore of Lake Arenal through Nuevo Arenal and drops past Tilarán to Cañas. Then the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) runs north across the plains of Guanacaste to Liberia.

From Liberia, Route 21 runs west past the airport towards Sardinal, and a local road drops down to the bay of Playa Hermosa. On a clear afternoon the gulf appears in front of you just before the village.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Playa Hermosa

Keep the camera within reach. On the way from La Fortuna to Playa Hermosa (Guanacaste) you will see:

  • Lake Arenal

The road runs along the north shore for a long stretch, with the water on one side and forested hills on the other.

  • The Guanacaste plains

Big ranches, tall guanacaste trees and long straight roads between Cañas and Liberia, much drier than Arenal.

  • The Gulf of Papagayo

From the road above Playa Hermosa you look out over the gulf, with the Papagayo Peninsula on the horizon.

  • Sardinal

The small town at the junction for the Papagayo beaches, with its church and football pitch on the main square.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Prefer to sightsee on the way? Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver who acts as your guide, a welcome kit of local beers, soft drinks and snacks, and sparkling water. We offer it on every route; here, you can ask for:

  1. Lake Arenal views

Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.

  2. The lake lookout (mirador)

Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.

  3. Café y Macadamia

A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.

Extra hours of stops cost $35 each, up to 4. Tell us what you would like to see when you book and we plan the timing around it. Standard goes direct, with a restroom break whenever you need it.

When that section is shut, we switch to the inland road through Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, which meets the Inter-American Highway further north; it adds time, and we warn you before you leave. Beyond the lake the highway is wide and easy. Guanacaste's dry months, roughly December to April, bring heat and dust; the rest of the year the plains turn green.

The roads from Liberia to Playa Hermosa are paved and straightforward. From December to March the Papagayo winds blow strongly along this coast; they cool the beach but can make boat trips choppy.

Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.
