This Playa Hermosa is the one in Guanacaste, on the Gulf of Papagayo between Playas del Coco and Playa Panamá, not the surf beach of the same name near Jacó. It is a wide, sheltered bay of grey sand with calm water for most of the year, good for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling, and famous for its sunsets over the gulf.
We collect you at your hotel or condominium in Playa Hermosa. The village is compact, but some condos are on the hills above the bay; give us the building name or send the location pin when you book.
La Fortuna is a small town, and your hotel may be in the centre or several kilometres out on the road to the volcano. Either way, we go to the door. Arriving before dark leaves time to settle in and plan the hanging bridges, the waterfall or a volcano hike for the next day.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Playa Hermosa (Guanacaste) gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

From the bay the local road climbs to Route 21, which heads east past the airport turn-off to Liberia and the Inter-American Highway.
At Cañas the road turns up into the hills to Tilarán and on to the north shore of Lake Arenal. The last stretch, Route 142 along the lake, is the slowest and most scenic part, and it ends at the foot of the volcano.

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 142 around Lake Arenal is paved but narrow and curvy, with little shoulder, few guard rails and almost no street lighting, according to independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026. Strong wind is common around Tilarán. The lakeside section between La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal has been closed by landslides after heavy rain, in July 2024 and again in July 2026.

Driver's tips for this route
- If you are visiting Arenal before flying home from Liberia, you can book the La Fortuna to Liberia airport route later on.
- Pack snorkel gear and wet things separately the night before.
- Bring a sweater for the evening in La Fortuna, which is cooler and wetter than the coast.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
