Leaving Playas del Coco
From Playas del Coco to La Fortuna: the logistics
Playas del Coco, usually just called Coco, is the liveliest beach town on the Gulf of Papagayo. It began as a fishing village and is now the region's main centre for diving and boat trips, with departures to the Catalina Islands and to the Bat Islands, known for big pelagic fish, from the beach and its small pier.
We collect you at your hotel or condo in Coco. The town centre is compact and busy around the beach road; tell us the exact property and we will tell you where the driver will wait if the street is narrow.
In La Fortuna we drop you at reception. Most hotels sit along Route 142 between the town and the volcano, a few minutes apart. Arenal often hides in cloud during the afternoon, so do not worry if you cannot see it on arrival.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Playas del Coco gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

Be ready at the agreed corner if your hotel is on a narrow street near the beach.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 170 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 21 to Liberia, Route 1 south to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal
- First stretch
- The main road from Coco via Sardinal to Route 21
From Coco the main road heads inland through Sardinal to Route 21, which takes you east past the airport turn-off to Liberia and the Inter-American Highway.
Leaving the Papagayo coast, the van climbs inland on local roads to Route 21 and heads east to Liberia, then south on the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) across the Guanacaste plains to Cañas.
Along the way
What you'll see between Playas del Coco and La Fortuna
What to look out for on the road to Arenal:
Liberia airport
On Route 21 you pass the turn-off for Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, a reminder that the beach is close to your flight home.
The Guanacaste plains
Big ranches, tall guanacaste trees and long straight roads between Cañas and Liberia, much drier than Arenal.
Tilarán's wind farms
Turbines line the ridges near Tilarán and Tejona, an area known for strong wind.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.
If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Book your pickup after your last dive, but remember the advice not to fly or travel to high altitude right after diving; ask your dive centre.
- The seafront streets are narrow; we may meet you at the nearest corner if needed.
- If you get carsick, remember the lake curves come at the end of this trip; ask for the front seat from the start.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.

What happens if the road around Lake Arenal is closed?

Can you take dive gear?
Yes. Tell us how many bags and how much equipment you have when you book, and we send a vehicle with room for it.
Is diving right after the transfer a problem?
Diving after a drive is not a problem; the issue is travelling to altitude right after diving. Arenal is not high, but ask your dive centre about safe intervals before the return trip.
Can you pick us up after a morning boat trip?
Yes. Tell us the expected return time; with about 3 h 15 min of driving you reach La Fortuna in the evening.
