The service

Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Playas del Coco

A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. You choose the pickup time, we collect you at the door of your La Fortuna hotel and the only stops on the way to Playas del Coco are the ones you ask for. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.

One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.

Your destination

Arriving in Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco, usually just called Coco, is the liveliest beach town on the Gulf of Papagayo. It began as a fishing village and is now the region's main centre for diving and boat trips, with departures to the Catalina Islands and to the Bat Islands, known for big pelagic fish, from the beach and its small pier.

Coco has the shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants that the quieter bays around it lack, plus a seafront park where locals gather at sunset. Places to stay range from guesthouses to resorts such as Pacifico Beach Club, and Liberia airport is only a short drive away.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 170 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Cañas, Route 1 north to Liberia, then Route 21 west
Last stretch
From Route 21, the main road via Sardinal into Coco

The drive to the Gulf of Papagayo has three parts. First comes the lake road, Route 142, which follows the north shore of Lake Arenal through Nuevo Arenal and drops past Tilarán to Cañas. Then the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) runs north across the plains of Guanacaste to Liberia.

From Liberia, Route 21 runs west past the airport, and the main road towards the coast leads through Sardinal to Playas del Coco, ending almost at the beach.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Playas del Coco

The landscape changes several times between Arenal and Playas del Coco. This is what passes the window:

  • Lake Arenal

The road runs along the north shore for a long stretch, with the water on one side and forested hills on the other.

  • The Guanacaste plains

Big ranches, tall guanacaste trees and long straight roads between Cañas and Liberia, much drier than Arenal.

  • The Coco seafront

Fishing boats anchored in the bay, the small pier and the seafront park where the town meets the beach.

  • Liberia airport

On Route 21 you pass the turn-off for Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, a reminder that the beach is close to your flight home.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

With Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) the transfer includes one to two hours of sightseeing stops, a bilingual driver who doubles as your guide, a welcome kit with local beers, soft drinks and bocas, and sparkling water on board. VIP stops are available on any route in the country. On this one, you can ask for:

  1. The lake lookout (mirador)

Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.

  2. Café y Macadamia

A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.

  3. Wildlife stops

When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.

Need more than two hours? Add up to 4 extra hours at $35 each when you book. On Standard the driver goes straight there and stops for the restroom whenever you ask.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.

The roads between Liberia and Coco are paved and among the easiest in Guanacaste. Inside Coco the streets near the beach get busy at sunset and at weekends. From December to March the Papagayo winds can make boat trips choppy.

If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. If you are flying out of Liberia in a few days, this coast is a good last stop: the airport is close.
  2. Divers: the dive season and visibility change through the year; ask the dive shops about conditions for your dates.
  3. If you have an early boat trip the next morning, an afternoon arrival leaves time to check in at the dive shop.
  4. Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
