The service

Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Playa Ocotal

A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. You choose the pickup time, we collect you at the door of your La Fortuna hotel and the only stops on the way to Playa Ocotal are the ones you ask for. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.

Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and nothing is added later: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats come with every booking. Go Standard for the fastest trip or VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

Your destination

Arriving in Playa Ocotal

Playa Ocotal is a small, sheltered cove of dark sand framed by rocky headlands, a few minutes south of Playas del Coco. It is much quieter than its neighbour, with clear water for snorkelling around the rocks and easy access to the dive sites of the Gulf of Papagayo.

Accommodation here is mostly on the hills above the cove: villas, condominiums and the Ocotal Beach Resort, with wide views over the gulf. For restaurants, shops and nightlife, Coco is a short drive away.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

  • Snorkelling around the rocks

The headlands at each end of the cove are good for snorkelling on calm days.

  • Diving trips

Dive sites in the gulf are a short boat ride away; centres in Coco and Ocotal organise trips.

  • Sunset from the hill

Hotels and villas on the hill look west over the gulf.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 175 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Cañas, Route 1 north to Liberia, then Route 21 west
Last stretch
Through Playas del Coco, then the short coast road south to Ocotal

The drive to the Gulf of Papagayo has three parts. First comes the lake road, Route 142, which follows the north shore of Lake Arenal through Nuevo Arenal and drops past Tilarán to Cañas. Then the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) runs north across the plains of Guanacaste to Liberia.

The last part runs through Playas del Coco and continues south on a short coastal road over the headland to Ocotal. The final metres to the hotels on the hill can be steep.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Playa Ocotal

From the volcano to Playa Ocotal, the view changes along the way:

  • Tilarán's wind farms

Turbines line the ridges near Tilarán and Tejona, an area known for strong wind.

  • The Guanacaste plains

Big ranches, tall guanacaste trees and long straight roads between Cañas and Liberia, much drier than Arenal.

  • The Ocotal headlands

Rocky points and small islands at the mouth of the cove, popular with snorkellers and divers.

  • Playas del Coco

You pass through the lively town of Coco just before arriving, with its seafront and fishing boats.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:

  1. Lake Arenal views

Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.

  2. The lake lookout (mirador)

Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.

  3. Wildlife stops

When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.

If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.

The roads to Ocotal are paved, but the hills around the cove are steep and some hotel driveways are tight. In the dry season, December to April, the area is very sunny and the Papagayo winds can blow strongly in the afternoons.

Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Sunscreen and a hat in the hand luggage: you leave the cool, cloudy volcano and arrive in the hottest, sunniest corner of the country.
  2. Divers: tell us about your gear so we send enough room; the dive shops of Coco are a few minutes away.
  3. Bring water shoes for the rocky edges of the cove.
  4. Travelling with children? Tell us their ages and weights when you book and the right child seat will be installed, free of charge.
