Your destination
Arriving in Río Perdido
Río Perdido is an adventure and thermal resort in the hills of Bagaces, in the volcanic country around the Miravalles volcano. It is built around a canyon with a warm river running through it, with trails, hanging bridges and natural thermal pools, and it offers activities such as canyon hikes and mountain biking.
The resort is fairly isolated, surrounded by dry forest and ranches, which is part of its appeal. Hotel Río Perdido & Thermal River is the property in our calculator; its access road leaves the main road beyond Bagaces, so give us your reservation name when you book.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 2 h 45 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 105 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 2 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Cañas, then Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) north
- Last stretch
- Route 1 to Bagaces, then the rural road towards the Miravalles area
This part of Guanacaste lies inland, under the volcanoes of the Guanacaste range, so the views are of ranches, dry forest and volcanic peaks rather than beaches. The highway is wide and the driving is easy once you have left the lake behind.
After Cañas, the Inter-American Highway runs north to Bagaces. There the route turns inland on a rural road towards the Miravalles area, climbing gently through ranches to the resort entrance.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Río Perdido

Lake Arenal
The north shore of the lake, with the wind turbines of Tilarán on the ridges above.
Cowboy country

Miravalles volcano
The tall cone of Miravalles dominates the landscape around Bagaces on clear days.
Bagaces
A small, traditional Guanacaste town on the Inter-American Highway, with ranches all around.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
Each additional hour of stops is $35, with a maximum of 4. Not booking VIP? Standard still includes a restroom or snack break on request.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
When that section is shut, we switch to the inland road through Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, which meets the Inter-American Highway further north; it adds time, and we warn you before you leave. Beyond the lake the highway is wide and easy. Guanacaste's dry months, roughly December to April, bring heat and dust; the rest of the year the plains turn green.
The Inter-American Highway is fast; the access road from Bagaces is rural and narrower. In the dry season the area is hot and dusty; in the rainy season, roughly May to November, the hills turn green.
If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.
From the road
Driver's tips for this route
- In the dry season the inland plains are very hot in the middle of the day; plan outdoor activities for the morning.
- Bring a swimsuit in the hand luggage: the thermal river is the first thing most guests want to try.
- The canyon trails have steps and loose stones; closed shoes are a good idea.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
