Leaving Río Perdido
From Río Perdido to La Fortuna: the logistics
Río Perdido is an adventure and thermal resort in the hills of Bagaces, in the volcanic country around the Miravalles volcano. It is built around a canyon with a warm river running through it, with trails, hanging bridges and natural thermal pools, and it offers activities such as canyon hikes and mountain biking.
We collect you at the Río Perdido reception. If you plan a morning activity at the canyon, set the pickup for after lunch; the drive back to La Fortuna takes about 2 h 45 min according to our fare table.
Once you are in La Fortuna you are close to everything the area is known for: the La Fortuna waterfall, the national park trails, the hot rivers and the lake. The driver leaves you at your hotel door and can point you to a good place for dinner.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 2 h 45 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Río Perdido gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 105 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 2 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) south to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal
- First stretch
- The rural road from the resort to Bagaces and Route 1
From the resort the van follows the rural road down to Bagaces and joins the Inter-American Highway southbound to Cañas, before the climb to Tilarán and the lake.
From there the road climbs to Tilarán and runs along the north shore of Lake Arenal on Route 142 to La Fortuna. The lake section is the slow and curvy end of the day.
Along the way
What you'll see between Río Perdido and La Fortuna
What to look out for on the road to Arenal:
Bagaces
A small, traditional Guanacaste town on the Inter-American Highway, with ranches all around.

Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
Want more time? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Our fallback is the inland road via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua to Route 1, longer but reliable; if we need it, you hear from us before departure. On the Inter-American Highway itself driving is simple. Expect strong sun and dry, dusty landscapes from about December to April and greener, wetter months after that.
Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.
From the road
Driver's tips for this route
- Arenal's hot springs are a different experience from Río Perdido's river; plan both, they do not compete.
- Bring a warm layer for La Fortuna, which is cooler and wetter in the evening.
- Pick-up after an early activity works well: the drive back takes most of the afternoon.
- If you get carsick, take the front seat or the first row and look ahead on the curves.
