Leaving Peñas Blancas border
From Peñas Blancas border to La Fortuna: the logistics
Peñas Blancas is the main land border crossing between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, on the Inter-American Highway north of La Cruz. It is a busy crossing used by trucks, buses and travellers on foot, with the immigration and customs buildings of each country a short walk apart.
We meet you on the Costa Rican side of the border after you have completed entry formalities. Waiting times at the crossing vary a lot; tell us roughly when you expect to cross and keep WhatsApp handy so the driver knows where to find you.
We know the La Fortuna end of this trip well, because it is where we live. Tell us the name of your hotel or the address of your rental and the driver goes straight there; if it is one of the hotels with a surcharge, the fare already shows it.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Peñas Blancas border after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

- Main roads
- Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) south to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal

- Route 1 south from the border towards La Cruz and Liberia
From the border the van heads south on the Inter-American Highway, past La Cruz and through the ranch land of northern Guanacaste towards Liberia.

What you'll see between Peñas Blancas and La Fortuna
What to look out for on the road to Arenal:
Santa Rosa National Park
The entrance to the dry-forest park lies on the highway between Liberia and La Cruz.
Cowboy country
The plains around Bagaces and Liberia are classic sabanero land, with big ranches and roadside cattle auctions.
The Guanacaste volcano chain
Miravalles, Rincón de la Vieja and Orosí rise inland from the highway on clear days.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Extra hours of stops cost $35 each, up to 4. Tell us what you would like to see when you book and we plan the timing around it. Standard goes direct, with a restroom break whenever you need it.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.
And if a road closure or extreme weather makes the transfer impossible, our terms let you choose: a new date or your money back in full.
