The service
Your private transfer from Papagayo to La Fortuna
Getting from Papagayo to Arenal is a long day if you have to piece it together. With us the van comes to your door in Papagayo, the driver loads the luggage and your group rides alone, all the way to reception in La Fortuna.
What you see is what you pay, per vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats are all in the price. Standard is the direct trip; VIP adds $80 per vehicle and turns the drive into a day with stops.
Leaving Papagayo
From Papagayo to La Fortuna: the logistics
The Papagayo Peninsula curls around Culebra Bay on the Gulf of Papagayo, a short drive from Liberia airport. It is home to some of the most exclusive resorts in Costa Rica, including the Four Seasons and Andaz, set on secluded beaches among dry tropical forest. Our Papagayo zone also covers the resorts around the bay, such as Secrets Papagayo, Planet Hollywood and El Mangroove.
We collect you at the lobby of your resort. Inside the peninsula, distances between the gate and the hotels are considerable, so the pickup time we confirm already includes the minutes from the lobby to the main road.
The trip ends at the entrance of your hotel in La Fortuna or around Arenal. Town has restaurants, supermarkets and tour offices within a few blocks, and many hotels on the volcano road have their own thermal pools for your first evening.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Papagayo gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 180 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 21 to Liberia, Route 1 south to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal
- First stretch
- From the resort to the peninsula gate and Route 21 east
From the resort the van drives out through the security gate and along the Papagayo road to Route 21, then east past the airport to Liberia.
At Cañas the road turns up into the hills to Tilarán and on to the north shore of Lake Arenal. The last stretch, Route 142 along the lake, is the slowest and most scenic part, and it ends at the foot of the volcano.
Along the way
What you'll see between Papagayo and La Fortuna
Some of what you will pass on the way to La Fortuna:
The peninsula's dry forest
Gumbo-limbo trees with peeling red bark, cacti and, in the dry season, leafless branches against a blue sky.
Tilarán's wind farms
Turbines line the ridges near Tilarán and Tejona, an area known for strong wind.
Lake Arenal
The road runs along the north shore for a long stretch, with the water on one side and forested hills on the other.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
Extra hours of stops cost $35 each, up to 4. Tell us what you would like to see when you book and we plan the timing around it. Standard goes direct, with a restroom break whenever you need it.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
The slow part of the day is the road around Lake Arenal. Driving guides published in 2025 and 2026 agree that Route 142 is fully paved but tight: a narrow carriageway, sharp bends, barely any hard shoulder and long unlit stretches. Gusts of wind are frequent near Tilarán, and heavy rain has brought down the slopes between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna more than once, most recently in July 2026 and before that in July 2024.
Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.
