The service
Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Papagayo
Leaving Arenal for Papagayo is easier when someone else handles the road. Your driver picks you up at your hotel at the time that suits you, loads the luggage and drives your group, and only your group, straight to your accommodation in Papagayo.
Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and nothing is added later: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats come with every booking. Go Standard for the fastest trip or VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.
Your destination
Arriving in Papagayo
The Papagayo Peninsula curls around Culebra Bay on the Gulf of Papagayo, a short drive from Liberia airport. It is home to some of the most exclusive resorts in Costa Rica, including the Four Seasons and Andaz, set on secluded beaches among dry tropical forest. Our Papagayo zone also covers the resorts around the bay, such as Secrets Papagayo, Planet Hollywood and El Mangroove.
The peninsula has a controlled entrance with security staff, and inside each resort the driver goes straight to the lobby. Give us the resort name and the name on the reservation; the guards may ask for it at the gate.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 180 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 3 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal to Cañas, Route 1 north to Liberia, then Route 21 west
- Last stretch
- Route 21 west from Liberia, then the Papagayo road to the peninsula gate
From Liberia, Route 21 heads west towards the coast, past the turn-off for the airport, and local roads take you down to the bays. The lake section is the slow one; the rest is open, sunny lowland driving.
After Liberia the route follows Route 21 west past the airport and turns off on the road to Culebra Bay and the peninsula. After the security gate, private roads lead through dry forest to the resorts.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Papagayo
From the volcano to Papagayo, the view changes along the way:
Lake Arenal
The road runs along the north shore for a long stretch, with the water on one side and forested hills on the other.
Tilarán's wind farms
Turbines line the ridges near Tilarán and Tejona, an area known for strong wind.
Culebra Bay
A deep, sheltered bay of the Gulf of Papagayo, ringed by dry-forest hills and small beaches.
The peninsula's dry forest
Gumbo-limbo trees with peeling red bark, cacti and, in the dry season, leafless branches against a blue sky.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.
The roads from Liberia to Papagayo are paved and in good condition, and the resort roads are private and well kept. From December to March the Papagayo winds blow strongly along this coast, especially in the afternoon.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route

- Give us the name on the resort reservation so we pass the security gate without delay.
- Arriving from the cloud and rain of Arenal? Keep sunglasses and sunscreen handy: Papagayo is one of the sunniest corners of the country.
