From Rincón de la Vieja to La Fortuna: the logistics
Rincón de la Vieja is an active volcano north-east of Liberia, protected by a national park. Its best-known sector, Las Pailas, has a loop trail past bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles and small volcanic lakes, and the slopes around it are full of waterfalls and hot springs.
We collect you at your lodge at the foot of the volcano. Several lodges are at the end of rural roads, some of them gravel; all our vehicles drive them. If you plan a morning activity, set the pickup for after lunch: the drive to La Fortuna takes about 3 h 15 min.
In La Fortuna we drop you at reception. Most hotels sit along Route 142 between the town and the volcano, a few minutes apart. Arenal often hides in cloud during the afternoon, so do not worry if you cannot see it on arrival.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Rincón de la Vieja gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

From your lodge the van follows the rural roads down through the ranches to Liberia and joins the Inter-American Highway southbound towards Bagaces and Cañas.
From northern Guanacaste the van takes the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) south across the plains, with the volcanoes of the Guanacaste range on the left, until the Cañas turn-off.

Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.

When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.
Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 142 around Lake Arenal is paved but narrow and curvy, with little shoulder, few guard rails and almost no street lighting, according to independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026. Strong wind is common around Tilarán. The lakeside section between La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal has been closed by landslides after heavy rain, in July 2024 and again in July 2026.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Pack muddy or volcanic-dusty shoes separately; the Las Pailas mud can stain.
- A swim in the lodge hot springs before the pickup is a good way to end your stay.
- Pick-up after an early activity works well: the drive back takes most of the afternoon.
- Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.

Is Route 142 around the lake the only way?
It is the usual way. If it is closed, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua to Route 1, which takes longer; we tell you before leaving.
Is the road to the lodges gravel?
Partly. The final stretch to several lodges is gravel or rough rural road. All our vehicles drive it regularly.
Are park tickets included?
No. Entrance to the national park and lodge activities are paid separately. The transfer covers the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and taxes.
How do payment and cancellation work?
You pay online by Visa, Mastercard or American Express on Tilopay's secure page; SINPE Móvil or a bank transfer can be arranged on WhatsApp. Cancel up to 48 hours before pickup for a full refund. Within 48 hours there is no refund, except for a flight cancellation documented by the airline.
