SJO or Liberia: which airport for Rincón de la Vieja?
From Liberia (LIR, Guanacaste): about 1 h and $125 per vehicle. The route takes Route 1 and local roads north of Liberia towards the volcano.
From SJO (Juan Santamaría, San José): about 4 h 30 min and $350 per vehicle. The route follows Route 1 (the Inter-American Highway) north-west to Liberia and then local roads towards the volcano.
The difference on the road is 3 h 30 min and $225. Many travelers land at one airport and fly home from the other; we cover both legs.

About Rincón de la Vieja
Rincón de la Vieja is an active volcano north-east of Liberia, inside a national park. The Las Pailas sector has a loop trail past bubbling mud pots, steaming vents and small volcanic lakes, and the slopes around it hide waterfalls and hot springs.
Several lodges at the foot of the volcano are working cattle ranches and offer horse riding, zip lines, river tubing and hot springs. The air is drier and warmer than in Arenal, and the last part of the road to some lodges is gravel.
