Getting there
SJO or Liberia: which airport for Monteverde?
From Liberia (LIR, Guanacaste): about 2 h 45 min and $230 per vehicle. The route runs south on Route 1 across the Guanacaste plains and then climbs the mountain road to Santa Elena.
From SJO (Juan Santamaría, San José): about 3 h 15 min and $220 per vehicle. The route follows Route 1 west and then climbs the mountain road to Santa Elena.
The difference on the road is 30 min and $10. Many travelers land at one airport and fly home from the other; we cover both legs.
The destination
About Monteverde
Monteverde sits high in the Cordillera de Tilarán, and most visitors stay in or around the village of Santa Elena. The cloud forest here is protected by several reserves, including the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve, where mist, mosses and orchids cover the trees and the resplendent quetzal is the bird everyone hopes to see.
Days fill up quickly with hanging bridges, zip lines, night walks and coffee or chocolate tours. The area was settled in the early 1950s by a group of American Quakers who started dairy farms, and it still feels like farm country. Many hotels are on side roads outside the village, so tell us the exact name when you book.
