The service
Your private transfer from Liberia Airport (LIR) to Monteverde
A private transfer means the vehicle is booked for your group alone. After a long flight you skip the taxi queue, the rental-car counter and the shared-shuttle timetable: your driver tracks your flight, waits if it lands late and takes you from the terminal to Monteverde, with stops only when you ask for them.
What you see is what you pay, per vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats are all in the price. Standard is the direct trip; VIP adds $80 per vehicle and turns the drive into a day with stops.
We confirm the pickup details with you when you book. With approximately 2 h 45 min of driving ahead, plan on arriving at the hotel in the afternoon or early evening if you land around midday.
Your destination
Arriving in Monteverde
Monteverde is the cloud-forest region around the village of Santa Elena, high in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Its reserves, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve among them, protect misty forest full of mosses, orchids and birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Hanging bridges, canopy lines, night walks and coffee and chocolate tours fill the days.
The community of Monteverde was founded in the early 1950s by a group of American Quakers who settled here and began dairy farming, and the area still has a small-farm feel. Hotels we drive to include Hotel Belmar, Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, Hotel Fonda Vela, Senda Monteverde, El Establo, Trapp Family Lodge, Koora and Hotel Poco a Poco.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Driving time
- approx. 2 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) south across the Guanacaste plains, then the mountain road up to Santa Elena
- Pickup point
- Just outside the terminal exit, with a name sign
Leaving Liberia airport you travel south on the flat, fast Inter-American Highway, the main road of the country, with ranches and dry forest on both sides. That is the easy half of the trip, and it is where the van makes up time before the mountains.
Along the way

Cattle country
Brahman cattle, cowboys on horseback and the shade trees of Guanacaste's open plains in the first hour.
The turn into the mountains
The point where the flat land ends and the road starts to climb, with the lowlands opening out behind you.
The first mist
Somewhere on the way up the air turns damp and cool and the first cloud forest appears at the edge of the road.

The small village at the heart of Monteverde, with shops, restaurants and tour offices.
The Monteverde ridge
Wind-sculpted trees and pastures along the top of the Cordillera de Tilarán, often in cloud.

Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops. Along this drive, you can ask for:

Before you travel
Road conditions on the way to Monteverde
The Inter-American Highway is paved and fast, with the usual trucks. The challenge is the last stretch, where potholes and gravel sections come and go with the season; every vehicle in our fleet drives it regularly.
The road between Tilarán and Monteverde has rough and partly gravel sections and can be slippery and misty, especially from November to February, when the wind is strongest. All our vehicles drive it regularly.

Driver's tips for this route
- The mountain road is easier in daylight. If your flight lands late in the afternoon, ask us about the best pickup plan before you book.
- Bring warm clothes and a rain jacket: Monteverde is cool and misty most of the year.
- Book the cloud-forest reserve or a guided walk for the early morning, when wildlife is most active.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.

How much is a private shuttle from Liberia Airport (LIR) to Monteverde?
$230 in a Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers), $285 in a Toyota Hiace (6–9) and $370 in a Maxus V90 (10–12). Prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, with taxes included. VIP adds $80 per vehicle.

All of them, including Hotel Belmar, Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, Fonda Vela, Senda, El Establo, Trapp Family Lodge, Koora and Poco a Poco. Give us the name when you book.
Is the road to Monteverde suitable for children?
Yes, it is just slow and bumpy in places. Tell us the children's ages and weights so the right seats are installed.
Is Monteverde a good first stop after landing at Liberia?
It works well if you land in the morning or around midday. With a late flight many travellers sleep near the airport and go up the mountain the next morning, because the last stretch is slow and better driven in daylight.
What happens if our flight is delayed or lands at night?
Nothing extra to pay. We track the flight number you give us and adjust the pickup, and we run transfers 24/7. If the airline cancels the flight, we move your transfer to the new date at no charge.
How much luggage fits?
The Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers) takes 5 large bags plus hand luggage and the Toyota Hiace and Maxus V90 take more. Bringing golf clubs, surfboards or bikes? Tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle.
