The service
Your private transfer from Monteverde to Liberia Airport
On the day you fly, the last thing you want is a shared shuttle stopping at other hotels. This transfer is private: one vehicle for your group, door to departures.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
On the road it is about 2 h 45 min. The pickup we confirm adds a margin for traffic and rain, so you are at Liberia airport roughly 3 hours before an international departure, as the pickup table on this page shows.
The place you are leaving
About Monteverde
Monteverde is the cloud-forest region around the village of Santa Elena, high in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Its reserves, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve among them, protect misty forest full of mosses, orchids and birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Hanging bridges, canopy lines, night walks and coffee and chocolate tours fill the days.

Busy check-in days
Weekends in high season, from December to April, are the busiest at Liberia airport, so please keep to the pickup time we confirm.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Driving time
- approx. 2 h 45 min without stops
- Main roads
- The mountain road down from Santa Elena, then Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) north to Liberia
- Pickup
- At your hotel, villa or lodge in Monteverde
- Drop-off
- Departures entrance of the terminal
We collect you at your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena, including those on the steep roads above the village. The first part of the trip is the descent off the mountain, the slow part, before the Inter-American Highway.
The first part of the trip to Liberia airport is the descent from Monteverde: narrow, winding and rough in places. At the foot of the mountains the van joins the Inter-American Highway and heads north across the flat, fast plains of Guanacaste to Liberia.

Road conditions on the way to Liberia Airport
The mountain section has potholes and gravel stretches that come and go with the season; the highway is paved and fast, with the usual trucks. We set the margin for the mountain part, not for the plains.

Driver's tips for this route
- Wear layers: it is cool when we leave the ridge and hot by the time you reach Liberia.
- Take something for motion sickness before the pickup: the winding part comes first.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the back of the van: the weather changes on the way.
