The service

Your private transfer from Monteverde to SJO Airport

On the day you fly, the last thing you want is a shared shuttle stopping at other hotels. This transfer is private: one vehicle for your group, door to departures.

There are no extras to discover later: the per-vehicle fare already includes taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats. Pick Standard for a direct trip, or upgrade to VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

On the road it is about 3 h 15 min. The pickup we confirm adds a margin for traffic and rain, so you are at SJO airport roughly 3 hours before an international departure, as the pickup table on this page shows.

The place you are leaving

Monteverde in a nutshell

Monteverde is the cloud-forest region around the village of Santa Elena, high in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Its reserves, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve among them, protect misty forest full of mosses, orchids and birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Hanging bridges, canopy lines, night walks and coffee and chocolate tours fill the days.

We collect you at your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena, including the lodges on the steep side roads above the village. The first hour is the descent off the mountain, so we set the pickup with a wide margin.

The trip to SJO starts with the slow part: the descent from Santa Elena down the mountain road, narrow and winding, with rough or unpaved stretches depending on recent maintenance. Once the van reaches the Inter-American Highway, Route 1, the road is paved, with trucks and a long climb near San Ramón, up into the Central Valley to Alajuela.

Along the way

  • Back into the valley

The highway climbs again toward the Central Valley and the towns around Alajuela.

Road conditions on the way to SJO Airport

The mountain section is the part that can slow you down, especially after heavy rain. The highway section to the Central Valley carries trucks and has roadworks in places in 2026, which we include when we set your pickup time.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Pack muddy boots from the forest trails in a plastic bag before the pickup: airlines do not mind, but the other bags will.
  2. If you get carsick, take something before the pickup: the winding mountain section comes first on this trip.
  3. Keep a warm layer on for the start: mornings on the ridge are cool, and you can take it off once you are down in the lowlands.

    Questions

Frequently asked questions: Monteverde → SJO Airport

How long is the drive from Monteverde to SJO airport?

About 3 h 15 min of driving without stops. Traffic, rain and stops come on top, which is why we add a margin of about 1 h when we set your pickup time.

What time will you pick us up for our flight?

It depends on the flight. We work back from an arrival at the airport 3 hours before an international departure, minus the drive and a margin. For example, for a flight at 3:00 p.m. we suggest a pickup at 7:45 a.m., and we confirm your exact time when you book.

How much is a private shuttle from Monteverde to SJO airport?

$220 in a Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers), $275 in a Toyota Hiace (6–9) and $360 in a Maxus V90 (10–12). Prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, with taxes included. VIP adds $80 per vehicle.

Can we do a morning tour in Monteverde and still catch our flight?

Only with an evening flight from SJO. The drive takes about 3 h 15 min plus the airport margin, and the mountain road is slow. Tell us the flight and the tour time and we confirm whether it works.

Is the road from Monteverde safe in the dark?

Our drivers know it well, but it is narrow and winding, so for pickups before about 5 a.m. we suggest leaving the day before and spending the night near the airport.

Is it risky to drive down from Monteverde on the day of the flight?

It is a normal travel day for us, but the mountain road is slow, so we set the pickup with a wide margin. For very early flights many travelers prefer to spend the last night near the airport; we can take you there the day before.

    How much luggage fits?

The Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers) takes 5 large bags plus hand luggage and the Toyota Hiace and Maxus V90 take more. Bringing golf clubs, surfboards or bikes? Tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle.
