The service
Your private transfer from Tamarindo to SJO Airport
Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and nothing is added later: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats come with every booking. Go Standard for the fastest trip or VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.
On the road it is about 4 h 45 min. The pickup we confirm adds a margin for traffic and rain, so you are at SJO airport roughly 3 hours before an international departure, as the pickup table on this page shows.

About Tamarindo
Tamarindo is the busiest beach town in Guanacaste: a long bay with surf for every level, a main street full of restaurants, bars and surf shops, and sunsets that draw a crowd to the sand every evening. At the north end of the beach, the Tamarindo estuary separates the town from Playa Grande and the Las Baulas National Marine Park.
Before you go
A last morning in Tamarindo
Surf for every level
Surf schools line the beach; the waves suit beginners at some tides and experts at others.
Estuary boat tour
Mangroves, birds and crocodiles in the Tamarindo estuary.
Last colones
Spend or change the last colones before the airport; the exchange rate at the terminal is poor.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h 45 min without stops
- Main roads
- Route 21 to Liberia or the Tempisque bridge, then Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) to the Central Valley
- Pickup
- At your hotel, villa or lodge in Tamarindo
- Drop-off
- Departures entrance of the terminal
We collect you at your hotel or condo in Tamarindo, Langosta or the hills around town. Traffic in the center can be slow at midday; the driver knows the side streets. The trip starts inland through Villarreal to the Huacas area.
Flying home from SJO after a stay in Guanacaste means a long drive: inland to the Inter-American Highway, via Liberia or the Tempisque bridge depending on the day, then across the province and up into the Central Valley. Most of it is highway; the slow parts are the approaches to the towns and the climb near San Ramón.
Along the way
What you'll see between Tamarindo and SJO Airport
A last look at the country on the way to SJO airport:
The Tempisque basin
Flat farmland, rice fields and wetlands in the lowlands between the Guanacaste coast and the highway.
Cowboy country
Sabaneros on horseback and cattle under the shade of guanacaste trees beside Route 1.
The climb to the valley
After Cañas and the plains, the road rises toward San Ramón and the Central Valley.

Road conditions on the way to SJO Airport
In the green season, roughly May to November, afternoon storms can reduce visibility for a while on the plains. If you have the choice, Liberia airport is much closer; if your flight is from SJO, we plan the pickup with a wide margin.
From the road
Driver's tips for this route
- With an early flight from SJO, a pickup the day before and a night near the airport is calmer than a midnight departure.
- If you can still change it, flying home from Liberia saves you most of this drive; if not, choose an afternoon or evening flight from SJO.
- Bringing surfboards, bikes or diving gear? Tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with room for it.

We set it from your flight time: 3 hours at the airport before an international departure, plus the drive and a margin for the road. A flight at 3:30 p.m., for instance, means a pickup at about 6:15 a.m.; the exact time comes with your confirmation.

Will we stop on such a long drive?
Yes, for a restroom and a quick bite. With VIP and a late flight, the stop can be a proper lunch; we only plan it if the flight time leaves room.
Are WiFi and child seats included?
Yes. WiFi, bottled water, child seats, tolls, taxes and insurance are all in the fare. Tell us the ages and weights of the children when you book and the right seat will be installed before we pick you up.
