The service

Your private transfer from Uvita to SJO Airport

A private transfer to the airport means no shared van collecting other passengers on the way and no timetable to fit: the vehicle is only for your group, and it leaves when your flight needs it to.

Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and nothing is added later: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats come with every booking. Go Standard for the fastest trip or VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

The drive takes about 4 h without stops. We add a margin for traffic and weather and work back from your flight, so you reach SJO airport about 3 hours before an international departure. The table below shows what that means for the usual flight times.

The place you are leaving

Uvita in a nutshell

Uvita is the heart of the Costa Ballena, the coast named after the humpback whales that visit it. Its best-known sight is the Marino Ballena National Park, where a sandbar and rocky reef at Punta Uvita form the shape of a whale's tail, best seen at low tide. Humpbacks from both hemispheres pass through these waters at different times of year, which makes whale-watching possible over several months.

The village itself is small, with supermarkets, sodas and tour offices along Route 34, while hotels and villas are spread over the green hills behind it, often with long ocean views. Among the places we drive to are Kurà Design Villas, Oxygen Jungle Villas and Hotel Cristal Ballena.

Before you go

Before you leave Uvita

  • Tide times

If you want a last walk on the whale's tail, check the low tide and plan the pickup after it.

  • Gate details

Hillside villas: send the driver the gate code or meeting point the day before.

  • Weigh the bags

Check your airline's weight limits the night before: it is easier to repack at the hotel than at the counter.

We collect you at your hotel or villa in Uvita or along the Costa Ballena. Many villas are up in the hills on steep roads, some of them gravel; send us the location pin and the gate details. From the hills the van drops down to Route 34 northbound.

From the South Pacific the van heads north on the Costanera Sur, through the oil-palm plantations to Quepos, then along the coast past Parrita and Jacó. Near Orotina it turns inland onto Route 27, the toll motorway, and climbs to the Central Valley and the airport.

Before you travel

Road conditions on the way to SJO Airport

Route 34 is wide and paved all the way, with trucks and beach traffic around Jacó. Route 27 can be slow at the end of weekends and holidays, when the coast drives back to the valley, so we take the day of the week into account.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Keep repellent handy for the pickup: the hills are humid and buggy at dawn and dusk.
  2. Have cash in colones for a fruit stand or a soda on the way: it is a long drive and there are good places along the Costanera.
  3. For a morning flight, a last night near the airport turns a stressful pre-dawn drive into a short ride.
