The van, the driver and the timing are yours alone: we do not combine groups, so the pickup is set by your flight and nothing else.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
The drive takes about 4 h 15 min without stops. We add a margin for traffic and weather and work back from your flight, so you reach SJO airport about 3 hours before an international departure. The table below shows what that means for the usual flight times.

We collect you at the lobby of your resort on the Papagayo Peninsula. Inside the peninsula the distances between the hotels and the gate are long, and the pickup time we confirm already includes them. From the gate the van heads east on Route 21 toward Liberia.
From the peninsula the van heads inland to Route 21 and Liberia, then joins the Inter-American Highway, Route 1, south-east across the plains through Bagaces and Cañas. After the plains the road climbs toward San Ramón and the Central Valley, and the airport is on the western side of it, in Alajuela.

Route 1 is a wide highway with a lot of freight traffic, and holiday weekends add heavy leisure traffic toward the Central Valley. Roadworks on parts of the route in 2026 are included in the margin we set for your pickup.

- If you can still change it, flying home from Liberia saves you most of this drive; if not, choose an afternoon or evening flight from SJO.
- For an early-morning flight from SJO, spend the last night near the airport and take the long drive the day before.

How long is the drive from Papagayo to SJO airport?
Count on about 4 h 15 min at the wheel, without stops. For the pickup time we add roughly 1 h 30 min more, for traffic and weather.
What time will you pick us up for our flight?
It depends on the flight. We work back from an arrival at the airport 3 hours before an international departure, minus the drive and a margin. For example, for a flight at 3:00 p.m. we suggest a pickup at 6:15 a.m., and we confirm your exact time when you book.
How much is a private shuttle from Papagayo to SJO airport?
$340 in a Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers), $385 in a Toyota Hiace (6–9) and $470 in a Maxus V90 (10–12). Prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, with taxes included. VIP adds $80 per vehicle.
Why is the price so much higher than to Liberia airport?
Because SJO is much further away: about 4 h 15 min of driving across Guanacaste and up to the Central Valley, compared with about 30 minutes to Liberia. The price is per vehicle and includes fuel, tolls and taxes.
Can we stop in Liberia on the way to SJO?
With VIP and a late flight, yes: a coffee or lunch in Liberia is right on the way. With Standard we only stop for a restroom or a short break.
Should we fly home from Liberia instead of SJO?
If you are staying on the Guanacaste coast, Liberia airport is much closer and the transfer costs less. If your flight is already booked from SJO, we plan the pickup with a wide margin; for early flights we suggest the night before near the airport.
How much luggage fits?
The Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers) takes 5 large bags plus hand luggage and the Toyota Hiace and Maxus V90 take more. Bringing golf clubs, surfboards or bikes? Tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle.
