The service

Your private transfer from SJO Airport to Papagayo

Landing after a long flight is not the moment to piece a trip together. With us the van is reserved for your party only, the driver follows your flight number, helps with the luggage and drives you directly to Papagayo. No strangers, no detours to other people's hotels.

One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.

We confirm the pickup details with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 15 min of driving ahead, this is a full travel day: an early flight puts you at the hotel in daylight, while a late landing means part of the drive is after dark.

Your destination

Arriving in Papagayo

The Papagayo Peninsula curls around Culebra Bay on the Gulf of Papagayo, a short drive from Liberia airport. It is home to some of the most exclusive resorts in Costa Rica, including the Four Seasons and Andaz, set on secluded beaches among dry tropical forest. Our Papagayo zone also covers the resorts around the bay, such as Secrets Papagayo, Planet Hollywood and El Mangroove.

After Liberia the route follows Route 21 west past the airport and turns off on the road to Culebra Bay and the peninsula. After the security gate, private roads lead through dry forest to the resorts.

What you'll see between SJO Airport and Papagayo

Some of what you will pass on this drive:

  • Cowboy country

The plains around Bagaces and Liberia are classic sabanero land, with big ranches and roadside cattle auctions.

  • The Guanacaste volcano chain

Miravalles, Rincón de la Vieja and Orosí rise inland from the highway on clear days.

  • Culebra Bay

A deep, sheltered bay of the Gulf of Papagayo, ringed by dry-forest hills and small beaches.

Road conditions on the way to Papagayo

Route 1 across Guanacaste is a wide highway, but it carries a lot of freight and, on holiday weekends, heavy leisure traffic. The Cañas to Liberia stretch is straight and fast, and the slow parts are around San Ramón and the approaches to the towns.

The roads from Liberia to Papagayo are paved and in good condition, and the resort roads are private and well kept. From December to March the Papagayo winds blow strongly along this coast, especially in the afternoon.

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Sunscreen and a hat in the hand luggage: you leave the highlands and arrive in the hottest, sunniest corner of the country.

  3. Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.

Approximately 4 h 15 min of driving according to our fare table. Stops, rain and traffic come on top of that; with VIP, add the one to two hours of sightseeing stops.

How much is a private shuttle from San José Airport (SJO) to Papagayo?

Yes. We go through the security gate to your resort's lobby. Give us the resort and the name on the reservation when you book.

Is it better to fly into Liberia for Guanacaste?

For beaches and resorts in Guanacaste, usually yes: the Liberia airport (LIR) is much closer, and the transfer is a fraction of the time. If San José has the better flights for you, we drive from SJO all the same.

What happens if our flight is delayed or lands at night?

Nothing extra to pay. We track the flight number you give us and adjust the pickup, and we run transfers 24/7. If the airline cancels the flight, we move your transfer to the new date at no charge.

Where will the driver meet us at San José Airport (SJO)?

Just outside the terminal exit, holding a sign with your name. The day before, we send you the driver's name, photo and plate, and you can reach us on WhatsApp at any hour.
