The service

Your private transfer from SJO Airport to Tamarindo

Shared shuttles leave when they fill up and stop at several hotels. Ours is a private vehicle: you choose the pickup, the driver is at arrivals tracking your flight and the drive to Tamarindo goes door to door, at the pace of your group.

There are no extras to discover later: the per-vehicle fare already includes taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats. Pick Standard for a direct trip, or upgrade to VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

We confirm the pickup details with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 45 min of driving ahead, this is a full travel day: an early flight puts you at the hotel in daylight, while a late landing means part of the drive is after dark.

Your destination

Arriving in Tamarindo

Tamarindo is the busiest beach town in Guanacaste: a long bay with surf for every level, a main street full of restaurants, bars and surf shops, and sunsets that draw a crowd to the sand every evening. At the north end of the beach, the Tamarindo estuary separates the town from Playa Grande and the Las Baulas National Marine Park.

From the Huacas area the road heads south and west through Villarreal and drops into Tamarindo. The final stretch along the main street can be slow in the afternoon, when the town fills up.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Driving time
approx. 4 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 1 (Inter-American Highway) north-west to Liberia, then Route 21 and local roads to the coast
Last stretch
From Huacas, the road through Villarreal into Tamarindo
Pickup point
Just outside the terminal exit, with a name sign

From Liberia, Route 21 runs west towards the coast and local roads lead down to the bays. The first half of the trip is highway driving and the last part is slower and depends on exactly where your hotel is, since the coast is a chain of separate beaches.

Along the way

What you'll see between SJO Airport and Tamarindo

What passes the window on the way from the airport to Tamarindo:

  • The Guanacaste plains

Big ranches, tall guanacaste trees and long straight roads, much drier than the Central Valley; in the dry season the land turns gold.

  • The Guanacaste volcano chain

Miravalles, Rincón de la Vieja and Orosí rise inland from the highway on clear days.

  • The Tamarindo estuary

The river mouth at the north end of the beach, lined with mangroves; boat tours look for crocodiles and birds there.

Road conditions on the way to Tamarindo

In the dry season the plains are very hot in the middle of the day; in the green season, roughly May to November, afternoon storms are frequent and can reduce visibility for a while. Allow extra time if you are catching a connection or an activity on the day.

The roads to Tamarindo are paved. In town, the main street is narrow and busy; in the dry season, from December to April, Tamarindo is hot and sunny, and on weekends and holidays traffic increases.
