From SJO (Juan Santamaría, San José): about 4 h 45 min and $345 per vehicle. The route follows Route 1 (the Inter-American Highway) north-west towards Guanacaste and then local roads to the coast.

The destination
About Tamarindo
Tamarindo is the liveliest beach town in Guanacaste: a wide bay with waves for beginners and experienced surfers, a main street full of restaurants and bars, and a crowd on the sand every evening for the sunset.
The Tamarindo estuary at the north end of the beach separates the town from Playa Grande and the Las Baulas National Marine Park. Hotels range from hostels to resorts, and the town is a good base for day trips to the quieter beaches around it.
