The service
Your private transfer from Liberia Airport (LIR) to Tamarindo
A private transfer means the vehicle is booked for your group alone. After a long flight you skip the taxi queue, the rental-car counter and the shared-shuttle timetable: your driver tracks your flight, waits if it lands late and takes you from the terminal to Tamarindo, with stops only when you ask for them.
The fare is per vehicle and final: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats are included, and there is nothing to pay the driver. Choose Standard to go direct, or add Tropical Experts VIP (+$80) for one to two hours of sightseeing stops.
We confirm the pickup details with you when you book. With approximately 1 h 15 min of driving ahead, most travellers go straight to the hotel and still have time for the pool or a late lunch.
Your destination
Arriving in Tamarindo
Tamarindo is the busiest beach town in Guanacaste: a long bay with surf for every level, a main street full of restaurants, bars and surf shops, and sunsets that draw a crowd to the sand every evening. At the north end of the beach, the Tamarindo estuary separates the town from Playa Grande and the Las Baulas National Marine Park.
There are hotels for every budget, from hostels to resorts. Among those we drive to are Tamarindo Diriá Beach Resort, Hotel Capitán Suizo, Hotel Jardín del Edén, Wyndham Tamarindo and Cala Luna Boutique Hotel. It is also a good base for day trips to quieter beaches north and south.
From the Huacas area the road heads south and west through Villarreal and drops into Tamarindo. The final stretch along the main street can be slow in the afternoon, when the town fills up.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Driving time
- approx. 1 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 21 south-west through ranch country, then local roads around Huacas to the coast
- Last stretch
- From Huacas, the road through Villarreal into Tamarindo
- Pickup point
- Just outside the terminal exit, with a name sign
From Huacas the road reaches the sea in a few kilometres. Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal and Las Catalinas sit close together along this stretch of coast, and Tamarindo and Hacienda Pinilla lie a little further south, so the last part of the drive is short whichever bay you are heading for.
Along the way
What you'll see between Liberia Airport and Tamarindo
What passes the window on the way from the airport to Tamarindo:
Guanacaste ranch country
Long fences, brahman cattle and the wide crowns of guanacaste trees, the national tree, along Route 21.
The first glimpse of the Pacific
Near the end the road drops towards the coast and the sea opens up with the headlands of the bays ahead.
The Tamarindo estuary
The river mouth at the north end of the beach, lined with mangroves; boat tours look for crocodiles and birds there.
Villarreal
The small inland town just before Tamarindo, where many locals who work on the coast live.
