Andaz opened in 2013 as the brand's second resort of that year, on a site of about 28 oceanfront acres, in a pre-colonial style by Costa Rican architect Ronald Zürcher. The Michelin Guide lists it with one Key and 153 rooms and suites, and Forbes Travel Guide rates it Four-Star. A renovation that began in 2022 reworked the beach club and the signature restaurant Ostra, and in January 2024 the resort announced 25 new villas of one to three bedrooms on a hillside over the bay, with private plunge pools.
What matters for arrival is the layout. The hotel is on a slope, so you arrive at an open-air lobby, and staff meet you at the car and move luggage by golf cart. The beach club, Casa de Playa, is on Playa Nacascolo and is reached by a short boat ride from the main resort, which means that a few guests spend part of the day away from the main building. The Points Guy describes the two beaches on the property as small.
Andaz shares Peninsula Papagayo with the Four Seasons, and both are in our Papagayo fare zone: there is no surcharge for either, and the fare to the resort is the same. If you are visiting friends or family at the other hotel, a single vehicle can serve both stops, and you should tell us at booking so we put both names on the voucher.

From SJO airport (San José)
Your driver waits outside the terminal at SJO with a sign bearing your name. The ride is long: our fare table gives approx. 4 h 15 min of driving, mostly on Route 1, the Inter-American Highway, through Cañas to the Liberia area, where the road turns toward the Papagayo coast. Nobody enjoys arriving at a hillside resort after a full day in the car, so if your schedule allows it, an early flight helps. Those who prefer to avoid the drive can fly into Liberia and book the shorter transfer below.

From Liberia airport the Points Guy gives about 20 miles and a ride of 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, on a one-lane road past farms and sugar cane; Forbes Travel Guide says about 35 minutes and Michelin says under an hour. The range is wide because the road is mostly one lane and traffic sets the pace; plan on the longer figure if your onward plans are tight.

Yes. We follow your flight, so a delay does not change who is waiting for you. The road from Liberia is mostly one lane, so we recommend giving us your real landing time and telling the hotel when to expect you.
Can we travel with surf boards, golf clubs or large bags?
Tell us what you are carrying when you book. The vehicle carries only your group, but a larger vehicle may be needed for oversized items; the 6 to 9 passenger fare is $165 from Liberia.
Can we add stops on the way or request child seats?
