Leaving Monteverde
From Monteverde to La Fortuna: the logistics
Monteverde is the cloud-forest region around the village of Santa Elena, high in the Cordillera de Tilarán. Its reserves, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena reserve among them, protect misty forest full of mosses, orchids and birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Hanging bridges, canopy lines, night walks and coffee and chocolate tours fill the days.
We collect you at your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena. Some hotels are on steep side roads above the village; the driver knows them. If you have an early tour, set the pickup for after lunch: the drive to La Fortuna is about 3 h 15 min.
Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, whether it is in town, on the road to the volcano or out towards El Castillo. If you arrive in the afternoon, the evening is a good moment for the hot springs; the volcano is usually clearest early the next morning.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Monteverde gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Monteverde is often cool, windy and misty, especially from November to February, when strong trade winds blow over the ridge. In the rainy months, mud and landslides can slow the mountain section, so we may suggest an earlier departure.
And if a road closure or extreme weather makes the transfer impossible, our terms let you choose: a new date or your money back in full.

Driver's tips for this route
- Pack muddy shoes from the forest trails separately before the pickup.
- If you get carsick, take something before leaving: the bumpy mountain section comes first.
- Book the Arenal hot springs for the evening of arrival: after the cold of Monteverde they are welcome.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
