Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Hacienda Pinilla
A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. You choose the pickup time, we collect you at the door of your La Fortuna hotel and the only stops on the way to Hacienda Pinilla are the ones you ask for. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.
There are no extras to discover later: the per-vehicle fare already includes taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats. Pick Standard for a direct trip, or upgrade to VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.
Your destination
Arriving in Hacienda Pinilla
Hacienda Pinilla is a large private residential and resort community on the coast south of Tamarindo, built on the land of an old cattle ranch. Behind its security gate are villas, condominiums, a golf course, a beach club and several kilometres of coastline with quiet beaches, as well as trails through dry forest.
Most guests stay in private villas or rental homes managed by local companies, and the JW Marriott Guanacaste resort is also inside the property. Because the community is large, tell us the name of your villa, the building or the rental company: the guards at the gate will ask for it.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 210 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal, Route 1 north, Route 21 across Guanacaste, then the Huacas–Tamarindo roads
- Last stretch
- From Villarreal, the road south to the Hacienda Pinilla gate, then the internal roads
From Huacas, local roads lead south and west to Tamarindo, Playa Grande and the beaches beyond. The coast here is a chain of separate bays, so the last few kilometres depend on exactly where you are staying.
After Villarreal the route continues south on rural roads to the Hacienda Pinilla gate. Inside, private roads wind between the golf course, dry forest and residential areas to the villas.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Hacienda Pinilla
What to look out for on the road to Hacienda Pinilla:
Lake Arenal
A long stretch along the north shore of the largest lake in the country, with views to the volcano on clear days.
Tilarán's turbines
The wind farms on the ridges above the lake, one of the reasons Costa Rica produces most of its electricity from renewable sources.
The golf course
Fairways among the dry forest on the internal roads of the community.
Old ranch land
Pastures, tall trees and wildlife such as howler monkeys and coatis on the property's open spaces.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
Need more than two hours? Add up to 4 extra hours at $35 each when you book. On Standard the driver goes straight there and stops for the restroom whenever you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
When that section is shut, we switch to the inland road through Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, which meets the Inter-American Highway further north; it adds time, and we warn you before you leave. Beyond the lake the highway is wide and easy. Guanacaste's dry months, roughly December to April, bring heat and dust; the rest of the year the plains turn green.
Roads to the gate are paved, partly rural; the internal roads are private and well kept, with low speed limits. In the dry season the landscape is golden and dusty, and the Papagayo winds can blow in the afternoon.
Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.

Driver's tips for this route
- If you arrive on a Saturday, expect more traffic in Tamarindo town; the driver knows the side roads.
- Ask your rental company for the gate instructions and send them to us when you book.
- There are few shops inside; plan a supermarket stop in Villarreal or Tamarindo.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.

Yes. The JW Marriott Guanacaste resort is inside the property; there is a separate page for it, and the fare from La Fortuna is the same.
Do we need to register at the gate?
Your rental company usually informs security. Give us the reservation name and villa so the gate lets the vehicle in.
