Your destination
Arriving in Playa Potrero
Playa Potrero is a wide, quiet bay on the north Guanacaste coast, facing Flamingo across the water. Its long beach of light sand is calm most of the year, good for swimming, paddleboarding and long walks, and the village behind it is small and relaxed, with a football pitch, a few restaurants and holiday homes.
Bahía del Sol is one of the best-known beachfront hotels, and many visitors rent houses or condos between the beach and the hills. Las Catalinas lies just to the north, and Flamingo, Brasilito and Conchal are a short drive south.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 30 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 185 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h 30 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal, Route 1 north to Liberia, Route 21 west, then the coast roads around Huacas
- Last stretch
- From Huacas, the coast road past Flamingo to Potrero
From Huacas the road reaches the sea in a few kilometres. Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal and Las Catalinas sit close together along this stretch of coast, so the last part of the drive is short whichever bay you are heading to.
After Huacas the coast road continues through Brasilito and past Flamingo, then curves around the bay to Potrero. The village sits on the far side of the bay, with Flamingo's headland across the water.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
When that section is shut, we switch to the inland road through Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, which meets the Inter-American Highway further north; it adds time, and we warn you before you leave. Beyond the lake the highway is wide and easy. Guanacaste's dry months, roughly December to April, bring heat and dust; the rest of the year the plains turn green.
The roads to Potrero are paved as far as the village; some side streets are gravel. In the dry season the area is hot and dusty; the Papagayo winds can blow hard in the afternoons from December to March.
Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Arriving in the afternoon? The beaches on this stretch of coast face west, so sunset is the first thing to plan.
- Bring water shoes if you plan to explore the rocky ends of the bay.
- The village has few shops; stock up in Huacas or Flamingo, or ask the driver for a supermarket stop.
- If you get carsick, take the front seat or the first row and look ahead on the curves.
