From Playa Potrero to La Fortuna: the logistics
Playa Potrero is a wide, quiet bay on the north Guanacaste coast, facing Flamingo across the water. Its long beach of light sand is calm most of the year, good for swimming, paddleboarding and long walks, and the village behind it is small and relaxed, with a football pitch, a few restaurants and holiday homes.
We collect you at your hotel or rental in Potrero. Some houses are on side streets off the beach road; send us the location pin and the driver goes straight to your door.
La Fortuna is a small town, and your hotel may be in the centre or several kilometres out on the road to the volcano. Either way, we go to the door. Arriving before dark leaves time to settle in and plan the hanging bridges, the waterfall or a volcano hike for the next day.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Playa Potrero after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

From Potrero the van follows the bay road back past Flamingo and Brasilito and inland towards Huacas and Route 21.
From Cañas the road climbs to Tilarán and follows Route 142 along the north shore of Lake Arenal. The lake section is the slowest part of the day and the greenest: you swap dry forest for rainforest in less than an hour.

North of the village the road heads towards the hillside town of Las Catalinas on Playa Danta.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 142 around Lake Arenal is paved but narrow and curvy, with little shoulder, few guard rails and almost no street lighting, according to independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026. Strong wind is common around Tilarán. The lakeside section between La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal has been closed by landslides after heavy rain, in July 2024 and again in July 2026.
If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Have the rental's keys and check-out instructions ready before the pickup.
- If you rented paddleboards or kayaks, return them the night before.
- If you are not a fan of curves, take your usual motion-sickness remedy before the lake road, which comes in the last part of the trip.
- If you get carsick, take the front seat or the first row and look ahead on the curves.

What if Route 142 around the lake is closed?
Then we drive the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua to Route 1. It takes longer, and we warn you before setting off. Closures have happened after heavy rain, most recently in July 2026.
Is Potrero the same as Flamingo?
No, they are two different beaches on the same bay, a few minutes apart by road. From La Fortuna the fare is the same.
Can you reach houses on gravel streets?
Yes. All our vehicles drive gravel roads. Send us the location pin so the driver goes straight to your gate.
Why is the drive back to Arenal shorter?
