Getting from Playa Flamingo to Arenal is a long day if you have to piece it together. With us the van comes to your door in Playa Flamingo, the driver loads the luggage and your group rides alone, all the way to reception in La Fortuna.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
Leaving Playa Flamingo
From Playa Flamingo to La Fortuna: the logistics
Playa Flamingo is a curve of pale, almost white sand on the north Guanacaste coast, framed by a rocky headland covered in villas. It is one of the more upscale beach communities in the region, with calm water in the dry season, sunset views and boat trips, sportfishing and catamaran cruises leaving from the area.
We collect you at your hotel or villa in Flamingo. Several houses on the headland are reached by steep streets; give us the name of the property or the location pin, and the driver goes to your gate.
Once you are in La Fortuna you are close to everything the area is known for: the La Fortuna waterfall, the national park trails, the hot rivers and the lake. The driver leaves you at your hotel door and can point you to a good place for dinner.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Playa Flamingo after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

From Flamingo the van follows the coast road south through Brasilito and inland past Huacas, then joins Route 21 towards Liberia.
From Cañas the road climbs to Tilarán and follows Route 142 along the north shore of Lake Arenal. The lake section is the slowest part of the day and the greenest: you swap dry forest for rainforest in less than an hour.

What to look out for on the road to Arenal:
Brasilito
The fishing village between Conchal and Flamingo, with its football pitch right by the beach.
The Liberia ring of highways
The city of Liberia is where the plains route meets the road to the coast; the airport is just to the west.
Guanacaste ranch country
Long fences, brahman cattle and the wide crowns of guanacaste trees, the national tree, along Route 21.

Lake Arenal views

A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.
Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
The slow part of the day is the road around Lake Arenal. Driving guides published in 2025 and 2026 agree that Route 142 is fully paved but tight: a narrow carriageway, sharp bends, barely any hard shoulder and long unlit stretches. Gusts of wind are frequent near Tilarán, and heavy rain has brought down the slopes between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna more than once, most recently in July 2026 and before that in July 2024.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.
From the road
Driver's tips for this route
- Pack the beach things separately the night before so the bags close easily.
- Villas with steep driveways: meet the driver at the gate to load the luggage more easily.
- If you are not a fan of curves, take your usual motion-sickness remedy before the lake road, which comes in the last part of the trip.
- If you get carsick, take the front seat or the first row and look ahead on the curves.

Then we drive the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua to Route 1. It takes longer, and we warn you before setting off. Closures have happened after heavy rain, most recently in July 2026.

Yes, they are neighbours a few minutes apart along the same stretch of coast. From La Fortuna they share the same fare.
