Your destination
Arriving in Playa Flamingo
Playa Flamingo is a curve of pale, almost white sand on the north Guanacaste coast, framed by a rocky headland covered in villas. It is one of the more upscale beach communities in the region, with calm water in the dry season, sunset views and boat trips, sportfishing and catamaran cruises leaving from the area.
Hotels include Margaritaville Beach Resort Flamingo and Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa, and many visitors stay in the condominiums and houses on the hill. Potrero, Brasilito and Conchal are only a few minutes away, so it is easy to explore the neighbouring beaches.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 30 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 190 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h 30 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 around Lake Arenal, Route 1 north to Liberia, Route 21 west, then the coast roads around Huacas
- Last stretch
- From Huacas, the coast road through Brasilito to Flamingo
After the lake road and the Inter-American Highway to Liberia, the route leaves Liberia westwards on Route 21 across Guanacaste cattle country and then takes local roads towards the coast around Huacas, the junction town for the beaches north of Tamarindo.
The final kilometres follow the coast road from the Huacas area through Brasilito, past the entrance to Reserva Conchal, to Playa Flamingo. The headland of villas appears ahead just before the beach.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Playa Flamingo
Some of what you will pass on this drive:
Guanacaste ranch country
Long fences, brahman cattle and the wide crowns of guanacaste trees, the national tree, along Route 21.
The Liberia ring of highways
The city of Liberia is where the plains route meets the road to the coast; the airport is just to the west.
The Flamingo headland
A rocky point covered in villas, with sweeping views over Flamingo Bay and Potrero.
Brasilito
The fishing village between Conchal and Flamingo, with its football pitch right by the beach.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Lake Arenal views
Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Each additional hour of stops is $35, with a maximum of 4. Not booking VIP? Standard still includes a restroom or snack break on request.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Most of the curves on this trip come on Route 142 beside Lake Arenal, a paved road with little margin: narrow lanes, few barriers, no lighting at night and crosswinds around Tilarán, as independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026 point out. After very heavy rain, landslides have closed it between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna, in July 2024 and July 2026.
The roads from Liberia to Flamingo are paved; streets on the headland are steep and narrow. The fare table allows longer from La Fortuna to Flamingo than in the opposite direction, so plan the departure from Arenal with that in mind.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Arriving in the afternoon? The beaches on this stretch of coast face west, so sunset is the first thing to plan.
- Sunset from the Flamingo headland is worth planning on your first evening.
- If you are booking a catamaran or fishing trip, the next morning is ideal after an afternoon arrival.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
