Leaving Hacienda Pinilla

From Hacienda Pinilla to La Fortuna: the logistics

Hacienda Pinilla is a large private residential and resort community on the coast south of Tamarindo, built on the land of an old cattle ranch. Behind its security gate are villas, condominiums, a golf course, a beach club and several kilometres of coastline with quiet beaches, as well as trails through dry forest.

We collect you at your villa or residence inside Hacienda Pinilla. Give us the house name or number and the name of the rental company if there is one; the driver passes the security gate and goes to your door.

We know the La Fortuna end of this trip well, because it is where we live. Tell us the name of your hotel or the address of your rental and the driver goes straight there; if it is one of the hotels with a surcharge, the fare already shows it.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Hacienda Pinilla after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

Before you go

Before you leave Hacienda Pinilla

  • Rental check-out

Follow your rental company's check-out steps and leave the keys as instructed.

  • Gate time

The internal roads are slow; allow a few minutes from your villa to the gate.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 210 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 4 h without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Local roads to Huacas, Route 21 and Route 1 to Cañas, then Route 142 around Lake Arenal
First stretch
Internal roads to the gate, then north to Villarreal and Huacas

From your villa the internal roads lead to the gate, and from there the van heads north through Villarreal to the Huacas area and Route 21.

The final third of the day is the climb to Tilarán and the road around Lake Arenal, Route 142. It is the curviest and the most scenic part of the trip, and it delivers you to the foot of the volcano.

Along the way

What you'll see between Hacienda Pinilla and La Fortuna

Keep the camera within reach. On the way from Hacienda Pinilla to La Fortuna you will see:

  • Old ranch land

Pastures, tall trees and wildlife such as howler monkeys and coatis on the property's open spaces.

  • Tilarán's turbines

The wind farms on the ridges above the lake, one of the reasons Costa Rica produces most of its electricity from renewable sources.

  • Lake Arenal

A long stretch along the north shore of the largest lake in the country, with views to the volcano on clear days.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

If Route 142 is closed on your travel day, we take the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua, joining Route 1; it takes longer and we tell you before setting off. Once on the Inter-American Highway the driving is straightforward, and in the dry season, roughly December to April, Guanacaste is hot, dusty and sunny.

Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

Yes, a short stop at a supermarket in Villarreal or Tamarindo is easy to arrange; just tell the driver.

Do we pay the driver anything?

No. The fare is paid in full when you book, by card through Tilopay or by SINPE Móvil or bank transfer arranged on WhatsApp. There are no surcharges on the day and nothing to pay the driver; tips are up to you.
