Your destination

Arriving in Playa Grande

Playa Grande is a long, wild beach just north of Tamarindo, separated from it by the Tamarindo estuary. Most of it is protected by the Las Baulas National Marine Park, created to protect the nesting beach of the leatherback turtle, the largest sea turtle in the world; the beach is also known for its consistent surf.

The community behind the beach is small and spread out, with a few hotels, surf houses and rentals among the trees, and very little nightlife. Turtle-nesting activity on the beach is regulated, and visits at night are only possible with authorised guides, so ask your hotel about the rules during your stay.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 210 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 4 h without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 142 around Lake Arenal, Route 1 north, Route 21 across Guanacaste, then the Huacas–Tamarindo roads
Last stretch
From Huacas, the roads north-west to Playa Grande, partly through rural areas

This is the classic Arenal-to-the-beach transfer. After the lake road and the Inter-American Highway, the van crosses Guanacaste on Route 21, through ranch land and small towns, to the Huacas junction, the gateway to the Tamarindo coast.

Although Tamarindo is just across the estuary, by road Playa Grande is reached from the Huacas area on a separate road through farmland and dry forest. The last part follows the roads behind the beach to the hotels and houses.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Playa Grande

From the volcano to Playa Grande, the view changes along the way:

  • Dry forest and ranches

Guanacaste's dry tropical forest turns gold and leafless in the dry season and bright green when the rains come.

  • Tilarán's turbines

The wind farms on the ridges above the lake, one of the reasons Costa Rica produces most of its electricity from renewable sources.

  • Las Baulas National Marine Park

The protected beach and estuary where leatherback turtles come to nest; the park sign stands at the beach access.

  • The Tamarindo estuary

Mangroves along the estuary that separates Playa Grande from Tamarindo.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

With Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) the transfer includes one to two hours of sightseeing stops, a bilingual driver who doubles as your guide, a welcome kit with local beers, soft drinks and bocas, and sparkling water on board. VIP stops are available on any route in the country. On this one, you can ask for:

  1. Lake Arenal views

Short stops along the north shore of the lake when the clouds lift and the volcano shows across the water.

  2. The lake lookout (mirador)

Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.

  3. Wildlife stops

When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.

Each additional hour of stops is $35, with a maximum of 4. Not booking VIP? Standard still includes a restroom or snack break on request.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 142 around Lake Arenal is paved but narrow and curvy, with little shoulder, few guard rails and almost no street lighting, according to independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026. Strong wind is common around Tilarán. The lakeside section between La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal has been closed by landslides after heavy rain, in July 2024 and again in July 2026.

The roads to Playa Grande are paved for most of the way, with some gravel streets behind the beach. Because the area is part of a protected turtle beach, lighting is kept low at night; the driver goes slowly near the beach.

Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Surfboards are welcome: tell us how many when you book so we send a vehicle with room for them.
  2. Turtle nesting is regulated: night visits only with authorised guides. Ask your hotel about the season and the rules.
  3. Bring a torch with a red filter if you plan to walk at night; white lights disturb the turtles.
  4. Travelling with children? Tell us their ages and weights when you book and the right child seat will be installed, free of charge.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: La Fortuna → Playa Grande

How long is the drive from La Fortuna to Playa Grande?

Approximately 4 h of driving according to our fare table, for about 210 km. Stops, rain and traffic come on top of that; with VIP, add the one to two hours of sightseeing stops.

How much is a private shuttle from La Fortuna to Playa Grande?

$315 in a Hyundai Staria (1–5 passengers), $360 in a Toyota Hiace (6–9) and $445 in a Maxus V90 (10–12). Prices are per vehicle, in US dollars, with taxes included. VIP adds $80 per vehicle.

Do you take the lake road or the inland road?

Normally the lake road, Route 142 via Nuevo Arenal and Tilarán. If it is closed by a landslide, we use the inland alternative via Guatuso, the Tenorio Volcano area and Bijagua to Route 1, which takes longer.

Is Playa Grande far from Tamarindo?

Across the estuary they are very close, but by road it is a separate drive via the Huacas area. From La Fortuna the fare to Playa Grande and to Tamarindo is the same.

When is leatherback turtle season?

Leatherback nesting at Playa Grande has traditionally been between about October and March, but numbers have fallen sharply over the years. Visits are regulated and only possible with authorised guides.

Can we cross to Tamarindo from Playa Grande?

On foot or by small boat across the estuary, depending on the tide; by road it is a longer drive. Ask locally about the safest option.
