Shared shuttles leave at fixed times and collect other passengers on the way. Ours is booked for your party only: you set the pickup time in Playa Grande, we wait while you check out, and the drive to La Fortuna goes door to door.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
Leaving Playa Grande
From Playa Grande to La Fortuna: the logistics
Playa Grande is a long, wild beach just north of Tamarindo, separated from it by the Tamarindo estuary. Most of it is protected by the Las Baulas National Marine Park, created to protect the nesting beach of the leatherback turtle, the largest sea turtle in the world; the beach is also known for its consistent surf.
We collect you at your hotel or rental in Playa Grande. The houses are spread along the roads behind the beach, some of them gravel; send us the location pin so the driver goes straight to your gate.
In La Fortuna we drop you at reception. Most hotels sit along Route 142 between the town and the volcano, a few minutes apart. Arenal often hides in cloud during the afternoon, so do not worry if you cannot see it on arrival.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Playa Grande after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

Low light, early start

Gravel lanes
Meet the driver at the gate if your rental is on a narrow track.

Along the way
What you'll see between Playa Grande and La Fortuna
The scenery changes more than once on the way to Arenal. This is what passes the window:
The Tamarindo estuary
Mangroves along the estuary that separates Playa Grande from Tamarindo.
Tilarán's turbines
The wind farms on the ridges above the lake, one of the reasons Costa Rica produces most of its electricity from renewable sources.
Lake Arenal
A long stretch along the north shore of the largest lake in the country, with views to the volcano on clear days.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Our VIP upgrade (+$80 per vehicle) turns the transfer into a short tour: one to two hours of stops chosen with you, a bilingual driver-guide, a welcome kit and sparkling water on board. It is available on any route in the country. Ideas for this one:
The lake lookout (mirador)
Time to stretch your legs and take photos from a lookout high above the water.
Café y Macadamia
A restaurant with a view over Lake Arenal, good for a coffee or a late breakfast.
Wildlife stops
When coatis, monkeys or birds appear by the lake road, we pull over so you can see them.
Each additional hour of stops is $35, with a maximum of 4. Not booking VIP? Standard still includes a restroom or snack break on request.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Most of the curves on this trip come on Route 142 beside Lake Arenal, a paved road with little margin: narrow lanes, few barriers, no lighting at night and crosswinds around Tilarán, as independent driving guides from 2025 and 2026 point out. After very heavy rain, landslides have closed it between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna, in July 2024 and July 2026.
And if a road closure or extreme weather makes the transfer impossible, our terms let you choose: a new date or your money back in full.
