From SJO (Juan Santamaría, San José): about 4 h 30 min and $320 per vehicle. The route crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park on Route 32 to Limón and then follows Route 36 south along the coast.

About Puerto Viejo (Caribbean)
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the liveliest town on the southern Caribbean coast, with Afro-Caribbean, Bribri and international influences, reggae bars, cafés and surf shops. Salsa Brava, its reef break, is one of the strongest waves in the country.
South of town the coast road passes Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo, with jungle down to the sand, and many hotels and cabins along the way. There is another Puerto Viejo in Sarapiquí, so double-check the destination when you book.
