Marriott opened this resort on 30 September 2026 as the first all-inclusive in the JW Marriott brand, so it is a new hotel. Several sources note that it occupies the site of the former Dreams Las Mareas. Reports describe 415 rooms and suites, 17 pools, 15 dining and bar venues, a wellness area of about 16,000 square feet and a Family by JW Club. The Griffin Club is a premium tier within the resort, with its own lounge, pool and beach area. Marriott lists the property as family-friendly, with a minimum check-in age of 18.
The location is the main thing to know before booking a transfer. El Jobo is a small community on a peninsula between Bahía Salinas and the Gulf of Santa Elena, and the nearest town is La Cruz. Marriott states that the hotel has no shuttle service, and one travel guide to the resort warns that Arenal, Monteverde and La Fortuna are multi-hour drives from here, with no dining or nightlife outside the resort. Our fare zone, La Cruz · Costa Elena, is priced separately from Papagayo for that reason.
Do not confuse it with the other JW Marriott in Guanacaste. A separate JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa stands near Tamarindo, at Hacienda Pinilla, and it is a different hotel on the Pacific side. Getting to JW Marriott Costa Elena from SJO and Liberia
From SJO airport (San José)
From San José your driver waits outside arrivals with a sign bearing your name, and we follow your flight. Our fare table gives approx. 5 h of driving, the longest transfer in this part of the country and a full day after an international flight. The route runs west on Route 1, the Inter-American Highway, through Cañas and Liberia, and then continues north to La Cruz before the final stretch to the bay. If your itinerary allows it, a Liberia arrival saves hours. If you stay with San José, ask for stops; a VIP transfer adds one to two hours of sightseeing, and the Standard goes direct with a restroom break if you need one.
From Liberia airport (LIR)
Liberia is the airport for this resort. Marriott lists the hotel about 90 miles away, a figure that does not match other sources, which give around 54 to 56 miles (86 to 90 km). Our fare table shows approx. 1 h of driving, while a travel agency and a hotel review each speak of about an hour and a half, so plan on the longer time. The route follows Route 1 north from Liberia to La Cruz, turns off through the town and descends toward Bahía Salinas, then passes Playa Papaturro and Playa Copal before reaching El Jobo. The last stretch is a winding descent. The fare is $160 for up to five passengers, $215 for up to nine and $300 for up to twelve.
