This is the JW Marriott of the southwest Guanacaste coast, not the one at Costa Elena in the north, which is a different resort. It sits inside the gated Hacienda Pinilla community on Playa Mansita, a small and rocky beach with a very large pool directly in front of it. Oyster counts 310 guest rooms and describes the infinity pool as one of the biggest in Central America. Guests have access to the Hacienda Pinilla golf course, a spa, a fitness centre and a children's club for ages 4 to 12.
The resort is a destination in itself, and most people who stay here visit the nearby beaches rather than moving on every day. Playa Avellanas is about five minutes away by car and Tamarindo roughly half an hour, according to Oyster. Rincón de la Vieja National Park is around two and a half hours by road, which makes a day trip from here a long one, and some guests prefer to continue to the volcano by private transfer rather than return to the resort the same evening.
The hotel states that it does not provide shuttle service. It lists the private-transfer companies it works with, and the transfer is something you arrange yourself. From SJO airport (San José)
From San José the resort is 246 km away by the hotel's own figure, and our fare table gives approx. 4 h 45 min. The drive follows Route 1, the Inter-American Highway, to Liberia and then turns south toward the coast; we choose the exact approach on the day. Your driver waits outside customs with a sign bearing your name. The fare is $345 per vehicle for up to five passengers, $390 for up to nine and $475 for up to twelve. It is a full travel day, so plan the flight accordingly.
From Liberia airport (LIR)
Liberia is the closer airport. The hotel's page gives 74.8 km and Oyster speaks of about 90 minutes, and our fare table gives approx. 1 h 15 min. Most of the way is on paved national routes, and the last stretch runs through the Hacienda Pinilla community to the resort. Your driver meets you after immigration and baggage claim. The fare is $140 for up to five passengers, $195 for up to nine and $280 for up to twelve.
