W Costa Rica announced its opening in December 2018 as the first W in the country. The opening announcement counts about 150 guest rooms and describes a design that borrows from Guanacaste: headboards modelled on oropendola nests, bathrooms inspired by Chorotega pottery and a set of Tree House Suites built among the mangroves. Marriott lists five restaurants and bars, among them Cocina de Mercado, the Thai-inspired Latitud 10 Norte and the Zona Azul beach club, plus the WET Deck pool, which is for adults only outside festive periods and Easter.
The practical detail for your arrival is the estate. Prince of Travel describes leaving the main road at Highway 180 for a large gate with a security checkpoint, where staff confirm you have a booking at the W or the Westin. After the gate, the road to the hotel is long, may pass several roundabouts, and bellhops unload the vehicle at the entrance. Electric golf carts take guests between buildings. Marriott states that the hotel has no airport shuttle, so a private transfer is the normal way to arrive.
The Westin Reserva Conchal is about 650 metres away along the beach and uses the same entrance, which is why we always ask which of the two you booked.

Getting to W Costa Rica — Reserva Conchal from SJO and Liberia
From SJO airport (San José)
At San José your driver waits outside the terminal with a sign bearing your name, and we follow your flight in case it lands early or late. Marriott lists the hotel 258 km from SJO, and our fare table gives approx. 4 h 45 min – 5 h 15 min of driving. The route follows Route 1, the Inter-American Highway, west and then north through Cañas to the Liberia area, before turning toward the coast. A flight followed by that distance makes for a long day, and many travellers to the W choose a Liberia arrival to save hours on the road. If San José is your gateway, ask for a stop; a VIP transfer adds one to two hours of sightseeing, and the Standard goes direct with a break if you need one.
From Liberia airport (LIR)
From Liberia airport Marriott gives 62 km. Our fare table shows approx. 1 h 15 min – 1 h 45 min of driving, and travel writers describe a little over an hour on the road, which does not count the check at the estate gate or the long approach to the hotel itself. Tell us the hotel name and the name on your reservation and the driver will give them at the checkpoint. The fare is $135 for up to five passengers, $190 for up to nine and $275 for up to twelve.

Practical notes for W Costa Rica — Reserva Conchal
- Check-in at the W is at 3:00 pm and check-out at noon, per Marriott. Marriott lists a 24-hour front desk, which helps if your flight lands late, but tell the hotel your arrival time so the gate has you on its list.
- One traveller's account says Latitud 10 Norte, the Thai-inspired restaurant, is closed on Fridays. Ask the hotel about dining hours before you plan a first evening.
- Tamarindo's airstrip is about 16 km from the hotel. If you are flying in on a domestic flight, we can meet you there instead of at LIR.
- After your stay we can take you on at zone fares: $235 to Nosara, $220 to Sámara or $270 to Monteverde for up to five passengers.

Will the driver go through the gate and up to the hotel entrance?
Yes. The vehicle clears the checkpoint, drives to the hotel and stops at the entrance, where the bellhops unload the luggage. Make sure the hotel has your booking, since the gate checks reservations.
We land late. Can we still be collected?
Yes. We follow your flight and the driver waits at arrivals if it is delayed. The W's front desk is staffed 24 hours according to Marriott, but let the hotel know your expected arrival so the gate expects you.
Can we leave the hotel to go elsewhere in Guanacaste or beyond?
Yes. The Playa Conchal zone has set fares: up to five passengers pay $235 to Nosara, $220 to Sámara, $270 to Monteverde or $315 to La Fortuna. Ask for a return to LIR, or to SJO, at the same zone fare.
Can we have child seats or stops on the way?
Child seats are available; give us the ages when you book. With Tropical Experts VIP (+$80 per vehicle) you get one to two hours of stops, and extra hours are $35 each, up to 4.
