The service
Your private transfer from Liberia Airport (LIR) to Playas del Coco
Shared shuttles leave when they fill up and stop at several hotels. Ours is a private vehicle: you choose the pickup, the driver is at arrivals tracking your flight and the drive to Playas del Coco goes door to door, at the pace of your group.
One price covers the whole vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats, with nothing to pay on the day. Standard takes you straight there; VIP, for $80 more per vehicle, adds sightseeing stops and a driver who doubles as a guide.
We confirm the pickup details with you when you book. With approximately 30 min of driving ahead, most travellers go straight to the hotel and still have time for the pool or a late lunch.
Your destination
Arriving in Playas del Coco
Playas del Coco, usually just called Coco, is the liveliest beach town on the Gulf of Papagayo. It began as a fishing village and is now the region's main centre for diving and boat trips, with departures to the Catalina Islands and to the Bat Islands, known for big pelagic fish, from the beach and its small pier.
Coco has the shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants that the quieter bays around it lack, plus a seafront park where locals gather at sunset. Places to stay range from guesthouses to resorts such as Pacifico Beach Club, and Liberia airport is only a short drive away.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Driving time
- approx. 30 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Local paved roads west of the airport towards the Gulf of Papagayo coast
- Pickup point
- Just outside the terminal exit, with a name sign
The last kilometres depend on the bay: some roads are wide and landscaped up to a resort gate, while the beach towns have narrower streets where your driver knows the way to your door. Resort entrances have a security check, so give us your reservation name and hotel when you book.

What you'll see between Liberia Airport and Playas del Coco
Keep the camera within reach. Between the airport and Playas del Coco you will see:
Dry forest and ranches
Brahman cattle and wide-crowned guanacaste trees, the national tree, which are leafless and golden in the dry season and bright green once the rains arrive.
Volcanoes inland
On clear days Rincón de la Vieja and the other peaks of the Guanacaste range show behind you as you head for the coast.
The Coco seafront
Fishing boats anchored in the bay, the small pier and the seafront park where the town meets the beach.
Liberia airport
On Route 21 you pass the turn-off for Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, a reminder that the beach is close to your flight home.

Road conditions on the way to Playas del Coco
The roads between the airport and the gulf beaches are paved and in good condition. Traffic is usually light, and the main thing to watch for is cattle and the occasional slow truck.
The roads between Liberia and Coco are paved and among the easiest in Guanacaste. Inside Coco the streets near the beach get busy at sunset and at weekends. From December to March the Papagayo winds can make boat trips choppy.

Driver's tips for this route
- Keep sunscreen and water in your hand luggage: you step out of the airport into some of the hottest, sunniest weather in the country.
- Divers: the dive season and visibility change through the year; ask the dive shops about conditions for your dates.
- If you have an early boat trip the next morning, an afternoon arrival leaves time to check in at the dive shop.
- Bringing surfboards, bikes or diving gear? Tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with room for it.
