Arriving in Playa Ocotal
Playa Ocotal is a small, sheltered cove of dark sand framed by rocky headlands, a few minutes south of Playas del Coco. It is much quieter than its neighbour, with clear water for snorkelling around the rocks and easy access to the dive sites of the Gulf of Papagayo.
Accommodation here is mostly on the hills above the cove: villas, condominiums and the Ocotal Beach Resort, with wide views over the gulf. For restaurants, shops and nightlife, Coco is a short drive away.

This is the shortest of the Guanacaste transfers. From the airport the van heads west on paved roads across ranch land and dry forest towards the Gulf of Papagayo, a coast of sheltered bays where several of the country's best-known resorts sit.

Road conditions on the way to Playa Ocotal
In the dry season, from December to April, the area is hot and very sunny; in the green season, roughly May to November, afternoon showers are common but rarely last long. The coast catches the afternoon wind, which keeps the beaches pleasant.
