Leaving Río Celeste
From Río Celeste to La Fortuna: the logistics
Río Celeste is the river inside Tenorio Volcano National Park whose water turns an unreal sky blue. The colour appears where two clear streams meet and minerals in the water scatter the light, a spot known as Los Teñideros. A trail through the rainforest leads to the Río Celeste waterfall, the blue pools and the hot springs along the river.
We collect you at your lodge near the park. If you hike the Río Celeste trail on the morning of departure, plan the pickup for the early afternoon: the drive to La Fortuna is only about 1 h 30 min according to our fare table.
The trip ends at the entrance of your hotel in La Fortuna or around Arenal. Town has restaurants, supermarkets and tour offices within a few blocks, and many hotels on the volcano road have their own thermal pools for your first evening.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 1 h 30 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Río Celeste gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

Trail first, then pickup
Walk the trail when the park opens; a pickup in the early afternoon still gets you to La Fortuna in daylight.
Bag for muddy shoes
Keep a plastic bag for boots: the trail is often muddy.

Along the way
What you'll see between Río Celeste and La Fortuna
The scenery changes more than once on the way to Arenal. This is what passes the window:
Tenorio Volcano
The forested peaks of the Tenorio massif rise ahead as you approach the park.
Rivers of the north
The route crosses several lowland rivers; after heavy rain you will see how quickly they rise.
The Guatuso plains
Flat cattle country and small farms between Arenal and the Tenorio volcano.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Our VIP upgrade (+$80 per vehicle) turns the transfer into a short tour: one to two hours of stops chosen with you, a bilingual driver-guide, a welcome kit and sparkling water on board. It is available on any route in the country. Ideas for this one. Tell us what you would like to see and we will plan it: VIP stops are not limited to a fixed list.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Heavy rain is common in the northern lowlands for much of the year and can flood low spots for a few hours. When that happens we take a detour or wait for the water to drop; we tell you if it changes the timing.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.

Driver's tips for this route
- Pack muddy shoes in a separate bag before the pickup.
- The colour of the river is best after a few dry days; if it was cloudy on your visit, that is the rain, not the season.
- A mid-morning pickup still gets you to La Fortuna in time for lunch and an afternoon at the hot springs.
- Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
